Originally published during the early part of the twentieth
century, the Cambridge Manuals of Science and Literature were
designed to provide concise introductions to a broad range of
topics. They were written by experts for the general reader and
combined a comprehensive approach to knowledge with an emphasis on
accessibility. Plato: Moral and Political Ideals by Adela Marion
Adam, first printed in 1913, deals with the main substance of
Plato's philosophy of ethics and politics, set within the context
of his intellectual debt to Socrates.

Plato's "Protagoras" is the dialogue which pits Socrates against
Protagoras as representative of the 'sophistic movement' and
clearly distances Socrates from his teachings. Protagoras was the
chief exponent of the view, ascribed comically by Aristophanes in
"Clouds" to Socrates himself, that one should be able to argue with
equal force for or against any particular socio-political or
ethical standpoint (i.e. make the weaker argument appear the
stronger). He was also author of the famous dictum that 'man ins
the measure of all things'. This long-standing edition remains
invaluable. It contains a clear introduction, the Greek text,
detailed annotation, and appendices on the Simonides poem discussed
by Socrates in the dialogue, and on the life and works of the
'real' Protagoras.
First published in 1914, this volume was edited by the Cambridge
classical scholar A. M. Adam. Intended for beginners, Adam based
her text on the edition of her late husband, Dr James Adam, with
revised notes and a new introduction. The text is given in the
original Greek with a substantial vocabulary appended. This issue
marks the twentieth printing of what is now a classic edition.
