The book presents a forward-looking analysis of South-South economic relations, and how they might impact and be impacted by the rest of the world. It includes a broad array of empirical case studies from across the global south, including Africa, Latin America and, particularly, the rise of China and features a truly global group of authors, both policy practitioners and academics, including leading names in their field. The phrase `South-South cooperation' gained popularity in the 1970s as developing countries negotiated agreements aimed at narrowing the development gap with the North (UNDP 2004). More recently, however, the term has taken on new importance in the face of the global financial downturn and stalled multilateral trade negotiations. The surprising resilience of certain emerging economies and regional integration trends indicate that the global South may yet sit in the driver's seat of the world economy. The discussion reveals three key insights into the nature and future of economic collaboration in the global South. First, and perhaps most transparently, the nature of South-South economic relations extends far beyond simple trade relationships. It involves investment and finance, labour and workforce movement, as well as cooperation in global economic governance. Secondly, the `South', while a helpful category for some analyses, is far from homogeneous. Indeed, a gap seems to be widening between those countries designated `emerging economies' and those which are not. Finally, existing collaboration among Southern countries has had both distinctly positive and negative impacts thus far. Undoubtedly, South-South economic relations have potential for harm and for good. In the absence of directed policies and intentional market and government actors, imbalances of power and growing gaps in development will persist. With the right policies in place and the right incentives in the market, however, these relationships could forge a new global order with greater economic and political equality.

"South Asia 2060" is a dialogue among 47 experts from a diverse range of expertise and backgrounds, ranging from policymakers to academia to civil society activists and visionaries, on the likely longer-range trajectories of South Asia's future. The collection explores current regional trends, possible future trajectories, and the key factors that will determine whether these trajectories are positive or negative for the region, as a region. Departing from a purely security-based analysis, the volume considers factors such as development and human well-being to reveal not what will happen but what could happen, as well as the impact present conditions could have on the rest of the world.

In recent years, it has become apparent that South-South economic relations are increasing, and will continue to do so. There will be more trade agreements and more trade, more economic alliances and more political alliances with economic goals, more investment flows and an increasing acknowledgement that the Global South has more to offer than it has in the past. These new economics relations have great potential, both for harm and for good. In the absence of directed policies and intentional actors, imbalances of power and growing gaps in development will persist. With the right policies in place, however, these relationships could forge a new global order with greater economic and political equality. Covering a wide range of topics, including regional trade integration in Africa, the environmental impact of increased South-South trade, the changing patterns of South-South investment, and the effect of conflict on trade in South Asia, this ground-breaking volume presents an analysis of South-South economic relations, and how they might impact and be impacted by the rest of the world.

How Immigrants Impact Their Homelands (Paperback, New): Susan Eva Eckstein, Adil Najam How Immigrants Impact Their Homelands (Paperback, New)

R696 Discovery Miles 6 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How Immigrants Impact Their Homelands examines the range of economic, social, and cultural impacts immigrants have had, both knowingly and unknowingly, in their home countries. The book opens with overviews of the ways migrants become agents of homeland development. The essays that follow focus on the varied impacts immigrants have had in China, India, Cuba, Mexico, the Philippines, Mozambique, and Turkey. One contributor examines the role Indians who worked in Silicon Valley played in shaping the structure, successes, and continued evolution of India's IT industry. Another traces how Salvadoran immigrants extend U.S. gangs and their brutal violence to El Salvador and neighboring countries. The tragic situation in Mozambique of economically desperate emigres who travel to South Africa to work, contract HIV while there, and infect their wives upon their return is the subject of another essay. Taken together, the essays show the multiple ways countries are affected by immigration. Understanding these effects will provide a foundation for future policy reforms in ways that will strengthen the positive and minimize the negative effects of the current mobile world.Contributors. The purpose of this collected volume of essays is to build on and contribute to the larger conceptual literature on environment and security. In particular, the book seeks to fill one of the glaring gaps within this stream of scholarship- the inadequate number of existing case studies for South Asia and its component territories. Written entirely by the leading scholars from South Asia, the book examines a region that is the setting for some of the most important environmental security challenges of our time.
