Wohnen ist eine der wesentlichen kulturellen Ausdrucksformen menschlicher Gesellschaften. Unterschiedliche Moeglichkeiten des Zusammenlebens, aber zugleich auch der sozialen Differenzierung finden hier ihren Ausdruck. Dieses Buch vereint Vortrage, die 2001 anlasslich der Tagung Wohnformen und Lebenswelten im interkulturellen Vergleich an der Brandenburgischen Technischen Universitat Cottbus gehalten wurden. Eine der Besonderheiten des Projekts lag darin, dass Wohnen von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart in den Blick ruckte. Fur die Strukturierung ergaben sich drei ubergreifende Themenkomplexe: Gemeinschaftswelten, soziale Topographie; Ideale und Imaginationen sowie Nahtstellen des Privaten. Als Ansatzpunkt vieler Untersuchungen erwies sich die Frage nach der Wechselbeziehung zwischen Raumgestaltung und Lebensform. Die enge Beziehung zwischen baulichen und sozialen Strukturen war in vielen Fallen offensichtlich und wichtigste Grundlage der Interpretation.
