El Bienestar Animal es un concepto muy amplio que involucra diversas disciplinas, tales como fisiologia, etica y etologia, entre otras.Los postulados basicos del Bienestar Animal, contemplan necesidades elementales de los animales vivos, transporte y sacrificio de los mismos, asi como, cuestiones eticas alrededor de la experimentacion cientifica con animales. El Bienestar Animal comprende la responsabilidad que tienen los seres humanos con los demas animales, esta incluye el manejo, nutricion, prevencion y tratamiento de enfermedades, cuidado responsable, manipulacion humanitaria y cuando sea necesario, eutanasia. En este estudio se evaluaron tres mataderos de bovinos en Costa Rica para determinar si estos cumplen con la legislacion nacional y las normas internacionales referentes al bienestar animal. Dos de los establecimientos se encuentran en el Area Metropolitana y el tercero en un area rural. Se valoro el diseno de la planta fisica, las practicas de manejo antes y durante el sacrificio y la eficacia del metodo de aturdimiento empleado.
