The Role of Cities in International Relations - The Third-generation of Multi-level Governance? (Hardcover): Agnieszka Szpak,... The Role of Cities in International Relations - The Third-generation of Multi-level Governance? (Hardcover)
Agnieszka Szpak, Robert Gawlowski, Joanna Modrzynska, Pawel Modrzynski, Michal Dahl
R2,794 Discovery Miles 27 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Concerns about the position and function of nation-states in the international arena have led to a growing interest in the role of cities in international relations. This timely book advances the argument that cities are becoming active and informal actors in international law-making, indicating the emergence of a 'third generation' of multi-level governance. Expansive in scope, the book investigates various areas of city cooperation such as the economy, migration, security, sustainable development, ecology, and the position of cities in international law. Interviews conducted with the official representatives of several cities and international institutions, including UN-Habitat, the EU Committee of the Regions, and the Congress for Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, offer key insights into the most pressing urban issues of the 21st century. Examining the latest information on the international activities of cities, this engaging book explores the possibility that cities may soon reach the level of international subjects, capable of both implementing and creating international law. Contributing to the under-represented literature on the evolving function of cities in the modern world, this prescient book will be of interest to academics and students of urban studies, international relations, political science, and international law. City authorities dealing with international cooperation will benefit from its consideration of further development opportunities.

One of the most important activities of enterprises today is responsible entrepreneurship. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities can help to forge a stronger bond between employees and corporations, can boost morale, and can help both employees and employers feel more connected with the world around them. Moreover, the growing importance of this concept results from the fact that it is perceived as an effective tool for increasing competitiveness, improving the image of the company, or contributing to the generation of higher profits. In today's world, an active commitment to social responsibility is becoming more common for a company. CSR and Socially Responsible Investing Strategies in Transitioning and Emerging Economies is an essential reference source that identifies the scale and scope of implementation of CSR and socially responsible investing strategies and standards in companies operating in different transitioning and emerging economies as well as assessing the global effects of these activities. Featuring research on topics such as economic growth, responsible investing, and business ethics, this book is ideally designed for managers, executives, directors, corporate professionals, government officials, industry leaders, academicians, students, and researchers in the fields of international economics, international business, marketing, finance management, and public relations.

The Psychology of Collective Narcissism - Insights from Social Identity Theory: Agnieszka Golec De Zavala The Psychology of Collective Narcissism - Insights from Social Identity Theory
Agnieszka Golec De Zavala
R1,126 Discovery Miles 11 260 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Psychology of Collective Narcissism is a ground-breaking text that presents a new theory of collective narcissism, a belief that exaggerated greatness of one’s own group should be but is not sufficiently appreciated by others. The book presents this concept against the background of social identity theory and research. It explores antecedent as well as social and political consequences of collective narcissism. The author discusses how this burgeoning theory and research can help to elucidate a wide range of psychological dynamics involved in pressing societal issues, such as the declining appeal of democracy, increasing populism, decreasing social solidarity, increasing societal polarization and prejudice, intergroup hostility and political violence, social inequality, and fake news and belief in conspiracy theories. Also referring to societal problems exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, this highly topical work explores socially shared beliefs as risk factors when predicting responses to crises, and highlights conditions in which collective narcissism can be expected. The author also reviews research on interventions reducing the link between collective narcissism, prejudice and retaliatory intergroup hostility. This is a valuable read for academics and students in psychology and the social sciences, those interested in societal processes as well as professionals dealing with the impact of collective narcissism. Economic changes in a globalized world require businesses to create new management practices to remain competitive and successful. While a network paradigm is a key management development, the effective application of this paradigm in organizational practice is complicated by differing interpretations and approaches. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly understand the applicable factors and mechanisms to an efficacious business network. Networked Business Models in the Circular Economy provides innovative insights into achieving synergy through the cooperation of many business partners and organizations and adapting operational strategies for the whole network. While highlighting topics such as smart mobility, digital solutions, and green supply chain, this publication is ideally designed for organizational managers, entrepreneurs, economists, management scientists, business analyzers, financial consultants, researchers, and students seeking current research on the dynamical contributions required to achieve mutual growth.

The dictionary expands on the original idea of Karttunen and Lockhart to map the usage of loans in Nahuatl, by using a much larger and diversified corpus of sources, and by including contextual use, missing in earlier studies. Most importantly, these sources enrich the colonial corpus with modern data - significantly expanding on our knowledge on language continuity and change.

Most bioactive compounds have antioxidant activity, particularly tocochromanols, phenolics (flavonoids and phenolic acids), methylxantines and capsaicinoids. Some of these compounds have also other properties important for human health. For example, vitamin E protects against oxidative stress, but it is also known for its "non-antioxidant" functions, including cell signalling and antiproliferation. Selenium compounds and indoleamins are the components of the antioxidant enzymes. Selenium makes vitamin E acquisition easier and controls its physiological functions. In taking part in enzymatic reactions and protecting the cell against free radicals, selenium shows immunomodulative, antiphlogistic, and antiviral activity. Capsaicinoids possess not only antioxidant, but also antibacterial, analgesic, weight-reducing and thermoregulation properties. Studies have also demonstrated their gastroprotective and anticancer properties. Analytical Methods in the Determination of Bioactive Compounds and Elements in Food explores both the influence of particular compounds on human health and the methods used for their determination. Chapters describe various aspects of food and plant analysis, including chromatographic and non-chromatographic approaches as well as hyphenated techniques. Readers of this book will gain a comprehensive understanding of the important groups of bioactive compounds relevant to human health.

R3,570 Discovery Miles 35 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a detailed study of nonlinear partial differential equations satisfying certain nonstandard growth conditions which simultaneously extend polynomial, inhomogeneous and fully anisotropic growth. The common property of the many different kinds of equations considered is that the growth conditions of the highest order operators lead to a formulation of the equations in Musielak-Orlicz spaces. This high level of generality, understood as full anisotropy and inhomogeneity, requires new proof concepts and a generalization of the formalism, calling for an extended functional analytic framework. This theory is established in the first part of the book, which serves as an introduction to the subject, but is also an important ingredient of the whole story. The second part uses these theoretical tools for various types of PDEs, including abstract and parabolic equations but also PDEs arising from fluid and solid mechanics. For connoisseurs, there is a short chapter on homogenization of elliptic PDEs. The book will be of interest to researchers working in PDEs and in functional analysis.

This book introduces the reader to the concept of functional synchronization and how it operates on very different levels in psychological and social systems - from the emergence of thought to the formation of social relations and the structure of societies. For years, psychologists have investigated phenomena such as self-concept, social judgment, social relations, group dynamics, and cooperation and conflict, but have discussed these phenomena seoarately. This book shows how synchronization provides a foundational approach to these otherwise distinct and diverse psychological processes. This work shows that there is a basic tendency with many processes to become coordinated and progressively integrated into increasingly larger units through well-defined processes. For these larger units, new and largely adaptive functions emerge. Although synchronization affords progressive integration of system elements to enable correspondingly higher-order functions, the trajectory of synchronization is often characterized by periods of assembly and disassembly of system elements. This occurs when a task is completed and synchronization is no longer essential so that the elements once again operate in an independent fashion. It is argued that the disassembly-resynchronization scenario occurs at all levels of psychological and social reality. The implications of this approach for important issues in interpersonal relations and societal processes are discussed.
