R. S. E. W. Leuven, A.M.J. Ragas, A. J. M. Smits, G. Van Der Velde
R4,360 Discovery Miles 43 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

All over the world, sustainable river basin management is a leading principle of policy plans and legal instruments for water management (e.g. the European Water Framework Directive). The evidence, however, to underpin the full scope of sustainability is rather scanty. In this book an integrative perspective on trends and challenges in river science and management is demonstrated. The three pillars underneath sustainable water management, ecology, economy and sociology, are elaborated by experts in their fields. A number of papers integrate the current knowledge on the structure, functioning and management of 'living rivers'. The book includes data and experiences concerning the rivers Allier, Meuse, Rhine, Sava and Tagliamento in Europe and the river Illinois in the USA. Sustainable river basin management asks for un-orthodox rehabilitation programmes and ecosystem based and transboundary management approaches.

R5,511 Discovery Miles 55 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

More than anything else, this book is a tribute to Edsger W. Dijkstra, on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, by just a few of those fortunate enough to be influenced by him and his work and to be called his friend or relation, his master, colleague, or pupil. This book contains fifty-four technical contributions in different areas of endeavor, although many of them deal with an area of particular concern to Dijkstra: programming. Each contribution is relatively short and could be digested in one sitting. Together, they form a nice cross section of the discipline of programming at the beginning of the nineties. While many know of Dijkstra's technical contributions, they may not be aware of his ultimate goal, the mastery of complexity in mathematics and computing science. He has forcefully argued that beauty and elegance are essential to this mastery. The title of this book, chosen to reflect his ultimate goal, comes from a sentence in an article of his on some beautiful arguments using mathematical induction: .".". when we " "recognize the battle against chaos, mess, and unmastered " "complexity as one of computing sci"- "ence's major callings, " "we must admit that 'Beauty Is Our Business'.""

In the presented material it is shown that power, noise and accuracy should be treated in an unitary way, the three terms being well inter-related. This book is divided in a theoretical part which covers sub-micron digital and sub-micron analog followed by an applicative part where accuracy related power and noise related power is encountered.

Ethical Frontiers of the State (Hardcover): A.J.M. Milne Ethical Frontiers of the State (Hardcover)
A.J.M. Milne
R2,816 Discovery Miles 28 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The moral justification for government is, that it is needed to promote the community's interest. What is that interest an interest in? Upon what basis can disagreements about the community's interest and individual interests be reconciled? Can democracy enable dissatisfaction with their reconciliation to be lived with? Perhaps, if people are prepared to meet the requirements of democratic citizenship. What are these requirements, and what is their justification? These are the questions with which this book is concerned.

The Social Philosophy of English Idealism (Paperback): A.J.M. Milne The Social Philosophy of English Idealism (Paperback)
A.J.M. Milne
R1,026 Discovery Miles 10 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At the turn of the century Idealism was perhaps the leading school of philosophy in the English-speaking world. By the 1960s the situation was very different. There had occurred during the previous two generations what has been described as ‘a revolution in philosophy’, one consequence of which had been the almost total eclipse of Idealism. Originally published in 1962, this book is a critical study of certain aspects of the work of four Idealist philosophers: F. H. Bradley, T. H. Green, Bernard Bosanquet and Josiah Royce. It deals mainly with their social philosophy, but some consideration is also given to their metaphysics. It is the thesis of this book that there is a valid and significant form of Idealism to be found in the work of these philosophers, but that they did not succeed in developing it fully and consistently.

This book discusses several recent theoretic advancements in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary integration in the field of evolution. While exploring novel views, the text maintains a close link with one of the most broadly held views on evolution, namely that of "Darwinian evolution." This work puts forth a new point of view which allows researchers to define in detail the concept of evolution. To create this conceptual definition, the text applies a stringent object-based focus. With this focus, the editor has been able to develop an object-based pattern of evolution at the smallest scale. Subsequently, this smallest scale pattern is used as an innovative basis for generalizations. These generalizations create links between biological Darwinism and generalized Darwinism. The object-based approach that was used to suggest innovations in the field of Darwinian evolution also allowed for contributions to other topics, such as major evolutionary transitions theory, the definition of life and the relationships between evolution, self-organization and thermodynamics. Together, the chapters of this book and the multidisciplinary reflections and comments of various specialists on these chapters offer an exciting palette of innovative ideas.

A. J. M. (Lida) Schelwald-Van Der Kley, Linda Reijerkerk
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why do many water management projects, begun with the best of intentions, still fail? How is it that large infrastructural water works often encounter opposition? Is it perhaps, among other things, the lack of attention for the cultural context? These and other intriguing questions are dealt with in this book. The authors, having 20 years of experience on water and sanitation in an international context, have investigated the relationship between water and culture world-wide in order to find new keys to successful and sustainable water management. This book is based on extensive research and is intended to form a cultural road towards new sustainable water management practices. "Water: a way of life" takes the reader on a water journey through time and across the world's continents. Along the way it explains the past and present ways in which different cultures around the world, both traditional and modern, view and manage water in response to the distinct environment they inhabit. As beliefs and values are at the heart of any culture, it also highlights the views of the main world religions on water and its use. A better understanding of cultural water beliefs and practices may lead to new concepts for future sustainable water management - from flood management to water supply, sanitation and irrigation management. The book will be useful to water professionals exporting knowledge and technologies to foreign countries where the challenge is to create sustainable solutions for water management by taking into account local, cultural factors. It is also intended to encourage world leaders, politicians and decision-makers responsible for water management to use their power, knowledge and influence to really make a change for the benefit of the people they represent. In this way, water can become a source of cooperation rather than a source of conflict. The authors trust that this book, about water and culture, intended for a truly international audience, will be a source of inspiration.

Sol-Gel Materials - Chemistry and Applications (Hardcover): Paul O'Brien Sol-Gel Materials - Chemistry and Applications (Hardcover)
Paul O'Brien; John D. Wright, Nico A.J.M. Sommerdijk; Series edited by David Phillips, Stanley Roberts
R2,553 Discovery Miles 25 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sol-Gel processing methods, first used historically for decorative and constructional materials, were extensively developed in the last century for applications such as glasses, ceramics, catalysts, coatings, composites and fibres. Today they are reaching their full potential, enabling the preparation of new generations of advanced materials not easily accessible by other methods yet using mild, low-energy conditions. The topic is therefore increasingly included in advanced undergraduate, MSc and PhD programmes in the areas of chemistry, physics and materials science. This concise introductory text, written at the advanced undergraduate/first-year postgraduate level, is also suitable as an introduction to the development, mechanisms, chemistry, characterisation methods and applications of the technique. It provides readers with an extensive yet concise grounding in the theory of each area of the subject and details the real and potential applications and the future prospects of sol-gel chemistry.

On a Method of Multiprogramming (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): W.H.J. Feijen On a Method of Multiprogramming (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
W.H.J. Feijen; Foreword by D. Gries; A.J.M. van Gasteren
R4,452 Discovery Miles 44 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Here, the authors propose a method for the formal development of parallel programs - or multiprograms as they prefer to call them. They accomplish this with a minimum of formal gear, i.e. with the predicate calculus and the well- established theory of Owicki and Gries. They show that the Owicki/Gries theory can be effectively put to work for the formal development of multiprograms, regardless of whether these algorithms are distributed or not.

Mihai A.T. Sanduleanu, Ed A.J.M. van Tuijl
R2,773 Discovery Miles 27 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The work presented in Power Trade-offs and Low Power in Analog CMOS ICs concerns power, noise and accuracy in CMOS Analog IC Design. In the presented material it is shown that power, noise and accuracy should be treated in an unitary way, the three terms being well inter-related. The book is divided in a theoretical part which covers sub-micron digital and sub-micron analog followed by an applicative part where accuracy related power and noise related power is encountered.
The main part of the book deals with analog circuits working in a digital environment where the process has been optimized for digital applications. The general trend, in digital, to scale down the power supply makes the process of designing analog circuits a difficult task since most of the solutions valid for large supply voltages are not anymore useful due to the low voltage limitations. At low supply voltage, the key problem of analog signal processing functions is dynamic range reduction. In all cases this yields in an increase of power consumption. Besides, analog designers have to cope with second order effects generated by the incompatibility of the process with analog performance.
To get the best performance, knowing the limits of power in analog circuits and clearly defining the environment where analog circuits should work is a must. Starting from fundamental/physical limits we are discussing the practical limits of power in digital, mostly at the architecture level and practical limits of power in analog at circuit and architecture level. The fundamental limits are asymptotic limits and they cannot provide realistic comparisons between possible solutions. That is why the approach here provides a step further into power analysis by discussing all possible practical specs related to power at circuit and architecture level. For analog circuits Dynamic-Range*Speed product is limited by power, topology and supply voltage regardless of the type of circuits: continuous time or sampled data, current-mode or voltage mode.

The Theology of the Later Pauline Letters (Paperback): Andrew T. Lincoln, A.J.M. Wedderburn The Theology of the Later Pauline Letters (Paperback)
Andrew T. Lincoln, A.J.M. Wedderburn
R821 Discovery Miles 8 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume investigates the respective theologies of the Letters to the Colossians and the Ephesians, and in so doing provides an accessible introduction to the themes and significance of these New Testament books. A. J. M. Wedderburn examines the background to Colossians, and considers both its readers' situation and that of its author. He asks whether the proponents of the teaching against which this letter is written were Christians, putting forward their views as the true form of Christianity (as in Galatia), or whether they existed outside the Christian community as a seductive alternative to it. Andrew T. Lincoln examines in turn the authorship of Ephesians, and tries to explain the letter's strategy of persuasion and the key elements of its teaching about the new identity of the Christian believer. The similarities and differences between the thought of Ephesians and that of Paul are thereby set out clearly. Both sections of the book reflect on the relevance of these letters for today.
