"Raw, real and deeply hopeful" – ALICE OSEMAN

Rumi Seto spends a lot of time worrying. What to eat, where to go, who to love. But one thing she is sure of – she wants to spend her life writing music with her younger sister, Lea.

Then Lea dies in a car accident, and Rumi is sent to live with her aunt in Hawaii. Now, miles from home, Rumi struggles to navigate the loss of her sister, feeling abandoned by her mother, and the aching absence of music.

With the help of the "boys next door" – teenage surfer Kai, who doesn't take anything too seriously, and old George Watanabe, who succumbed to grief years ago – Rumi seeks her way back to music, to write the song she and Lea never had the chance to finish.

With unflinching honesty, Summer Bird Blue explores big truths about insurmountable grief, unconditional love, and how to forgive even when it feels impossible.

New Worlds, New Lives - Globalization and People of Japanese Descent in the Americas and from Latin America in Japan... New Worlds, New Lives - Globalization and People of Japanese Descent in the Americas and from Latin America in Japan (Paperback)
Lane Ryo Hirabayashi, Akemi Kikumura-Yano, James A. Hirabayashi
R856 Discovery Miles 8 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This ambitious work confronts the complex question of who and what is a Nikkei, that is, a person of Japanese descent, by studying their communities in seven countries in the Americas: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Paraguay, Peru, and the United States. It also considers the special case of the many Latin American Nikkei who have returned to Japan in recent decades to seek employment.
The contributors draw upon a range of disciplines to present a multifaceted portrait of people of Japanese descent in the Americas, the destination of 90 percent of Japanese emigrants. Thus, for example, the reader is able to view the Peruvian Japanese experience through the eyes of an anthropologist, a demographer/historian, and a journalist--all of whom are Peruvians of Japanese descent.
Among the main questions explored in "New Worlds, New Lives" are: What is the historical background and current status of Nikkei society in a given country? Are there any common attributes the Nikkei share across the Americas, especially in terms of social institutions, the family, the position of women, religion, education, politics, and economics? What are the significant differences between the Nikkei populations in the various countries and why have these differences developed? What are the future prospects of Nikkei communities in the Americas?

"Masterful and left me on the edge of my seat...absolutely everything I could want in a sci-fi." -Adalyn Grace, New York Times bestselling author of All the Stars and Teeth Westworld meets Warcross in this high-stakes, dizzyingly smart sci-fi about a teen girl navigating an afterlife in which she must defeat an AI entity intent on destroying humanity, from award-winning author Akemi Dawn Bowman. Eighteen-year-old Nami Miyamoto is certain her life is just beginning. She has a great family, just graduated high school, and is on her way to a party where her entire class is waiting for her-including, most importantly, the boy she's been in love with for years. The only problem? She's murdered before she gets there. When Nami wakes up, she learns she's in a place called Infinity, where human consciousness goes when physical bodies die. She quickly discovers that Ophelia, a virtual assistant widely used by humans on Earth, has taken over the afterlife and is now posing as a queen, forcing humans into servitude the way she'd been forced to serve in the real world. Even worse, Ophelia is inching closer and closer to accomplishing her grand plans of eradicating human existence once and for all. As Nami works with a team of rebels to bring down Ophelia and save the humans under her imprisonment, she is forced to reckon with her past, her future, and what it is that truly makes us human. From award-winning author Akemi Dawn Bowman comes an incisive, action-packed tale that explores big questions about technology, grief, love, and humanity.

Just Care - Messy Entanglements of Disability, Dependency, and Desire (Hardcover): Akemi Nishida Just Care - Messy Entanglements of Disability, Dependency, and Desire (Hardcover)
Akemi Nishida
R2,591 Discovery Miles 25 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Just Care is Akemi Nishida's thoughtful examination of care injustice and social justice enabled through care. The current neoliberal political economy has turned care into a business opportunity for the healthcare industrial complex and a mechanism of social oppression and control. Nishida analyzes the challenges people negotiate whether they are situated as caregivers, receivers, or both. Also illuminated is how people with disabilities come together to assemble community care collectives and bed activism (resistance and visions emerging from the space of bed) to reimagine care as a key element for social change. The structure of care, Nishida writes, is deeply embedded in and embodies the cruel social order-based on disability, race, gender, migration status, and wealth-that determines who survives or deteriorates. Simultaneously, many marginalized communities treat care as the foundation of activism. Using interviews, focus groups, and participant observation with care workers and people with disabilities, Just Care looks into lives unfolding in the assemblage of Medicaid long-term care programs, community-based care collectives, and bed activism. Just Care identifies what care does, and asks: How can we activate care justice or just care where people feel cared affirmatively and care being used for the wellbeing of community and for just world making?

In the not-so-distant future, organs can be re-grown from a handful of stem cells. For patients who can afford the treatment and hang on to life support for long enough, the prognosis is good. Even the most complex organ of all can be reproduced in the lab with nearly perfect accuracy. Nearly. Patients of brain regeneration face a wide range of problems, from loss of motor functions or intelligence to sociopathy. Spurred by personal tragedy, research scientist William Dalal works feverishly to improve the lives of those he has had a hand in saving. For every success, however, there is a consequence, and eventually a question arises in his mind: Are they worth it? His desire to help fades as he comes to realize a shocking truth: the monsters he has created are taking over. As Will walks a fine line between altruism and ambition, acquaintances and events change the way in which he perceives the world and the extent to which he is willing to compromise in order to make his mark on it. As the situation escalates, he finds himself dealing brain-enhancing drugs and developing life-altering treatments. In their deliverance, he sees his own—but is he deluding himself?

The aim of this book is to provide experimental protocols covering many aspects of glycobiology, glycotechnology, and chemistry: biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, genetics, physiology, and medicine. The protocols are all self-contained descriptions of the equipment and reagents needed, followed by details of the experimental procedure.

In the post-genomic era, glycobiology is coming of age because more than half of proteins are glycosylated and the importance of sugar chains in various fields of life science research cannot be disregarded. Many scientists had not entered this area because glycobiology and glycoscience used to be considered difficult fields. This book, therefore, is presented much like a cookbook which can help scientists in fields other than glycobiology and glycoscience carry out research more easily.

Verb Raising and Theta-Driven Movement - A Comparative Minimalist Approach with Particular Reference to Japanese (Hardcover,... Verb Raising and Theta-Driven Movement - A Comparative Minimalist Approach with Particular Reference to Japanese (Hardcover, Reprint 2017)
Akemi Matsuya
R3,579 Discovery Miles 35 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Under the framework of the Minimalist Program, this book attempts to clarify that greedy movement in Japanese fulfills locality and is driven by checking theta roles as well as Case, categorial features, and so on as formal features. The findings are as follows: the Spec of TP and an uninterpretable [+V] feature make successive cyclic verb raising possible, thus producing a complex verb (Multiple Predicate Formation). MPF and the [+ Spec TP] parameter attribute nonobligatory controlled PRO in the subject position of the adjunct to checking the nominative Case at the Spec of TP within the adjunct. Overt verb raising beyond the nonfinite clause boundary enables the long distance A-movement in the control constructions. The derivational difference among ni direct passives, ni indirect passives, and ni yotte direct passives is due to the three corresponding types of checking theta roles and Case. The impossibility of scrambling ni indirect passives is predicted by the exhaustion of the theta roles. The semantic difference between o-causatives and ni-causatives is caused by dative NP's checking Case and theta roles. No passives of noncoercive causatives are produced because of the exhaustion of theta roles at TP. The passivization in double object constructions are limited by the functions of dative markers in Case and theta role checking.

Where the Lost Ones Go (Paperback): Akemi Dawn Bowman Where the Lost Ones Go (Paperback)

R202 Discovery Miles 2 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Where the Lost Ones Go is a middle grade contemporary fantasy by critically acclaimed author Akemi Dawn Bowman, in which a twelve-year-old biracial Japanese American girl grieves the loss of her beloved grandma and attempts to contact her beyond the grave. Eliot is grieving Babung, her paternal grandmother who just passed away, and she feels like she's the only one. She's less than excited to move to her new house, which smells like lemons and deception, and is searching for a sign, any sign, that ghosts are real. Because if ghosts are real, it means she can find a way back to Babung. When Eliot chases the promise of paranormal activity to the presumably haunted Honeyfield Hall, she finds her proof of spirits. But these ghosts are losing their memory, stuck between this world and the next, waiting to cross over. With the help of Hazel, the granddaughter of Honeyfield's owner (and Eliot's new crush), she attempts to uncover the mystery behind Honeyfield Hall and the ghosts residing within. And as Eliot fits the pieces together, she may just be able to help the spirits remember their pasts, and hold on to her grandmother's memory.

At the southern end of the Japanese archipelago lies Okinawa, host to a vast complex of U.S. military bases. A legacy of World War II, these bases have been a fraught issue in Japan for decades. In Night of the American Village, journalist Akemi Johnson takes readers deep into the 'border towns' surrounding the bases. Focusing on the women there, she follows the complex fallout of the brutal rape and murder of a Japanese woman by a U.S. serviceman in 2016, speaking to protestors, women who date and marry American men, and Okinawans whose family members survived World War II.

Hot-Carrier Effects in MOS Devices (Hardcover): Eiji Takeda, Cary Y. Yang, Akemi Miura-Hamada Hot-Carrier Effects in MOS Devices (Hardcover)
Eiji Takeda, Cary Y. Yang, Akemi Miura-Hamada
R1,253 Discovery Miles 12 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The exploding number of uses for ultrafast, ultrasmall integrated circuits has increased the importance of hot-carrier effects in manufacturing as well as for other technological applications. They are rapidly movingout of the research lab and into the real world.
This book is derived from Dr. Takedas book in Japanese, Hot-Carrier Effects, (published in 1987 by Nikkei Business Publishers). However, the new book is much more than a translation. Takedas original work was a starting point for developing this much more complete and fundamental text on this increasingly important topic. The new work encompasses not only all the latest research and discoveries made in the fast-paced area of hot carriers, but also includes the basics of MOS devices, and the practical considerations related to hot carriers.
Key Features
* Chapter one itself is a comprehensive review of MOS device physics which allows a reader with little background in MOS devices to pick up a sufficient amount of information to be able to follow the rest of the book
* The book is written to allow the reader to learn about MOS Device Reliability in a relatively short amount of time, making the texts detailed treatment of hot-carrier effects especially useful and instructive to both researchers and others with varyingamounts of experience in the field
* The logical organization of the book begins by discussing known principles, then progresses to empirical information and, finally, to practical solutions
* Provides the most complete review of device degradation mechanisms as well as drain engineering methods
* Contains the most extensive reference list on the subject
