Writing Systems and Phonetics provides students with a critical
understanding of the writing systems of the world. Beginning by
exploring the spelling of English, including how it arose and how
it works today, the book goes on to address over 60 major languages
from around the globe and includes detailed descriptions and worked
examples of writing systems which foreground the phonetics of these
languages. Key areas covered include: the use of the Latin alphabet
in and beyond Europe; writing systems of the eastern Mediterranean,
Greek and its Cyrillic offshoot, Arabic and Hebrew; languages in
south and south-east Asia, including Hindi, Tamil, Burmese and
Thai, as well as in east Asia, including Chinese, Japanese and
Korean; reflections on ancient languages such as Sumerian,
Egyptian, Linear B and Mayan; a final chapter which sets out a
typology of writing systems. All of the languages covered are
contextualised by authentic illustrations, including road signs,
personal names and tables, to demonstrate how theoretical research
can be applied to the real world. Taking a unique geographical
focus that guides the reader on a journey across time and
continents, this book offers an engaging introduction for students
approaching for the first time the phonetics of writing systems,
their typology and the origins of scripts.
Since its first publication in 1962, Gimson's Pronunciation of
English has been the essential reference book for anyone studying
or teaching the pronunciation of English. This eighth edition has
been updated to describe General British (GB) as the principal
accent, rather than RP, and the accompanying transcriptions have
been brought into line with recent changes in pronunciation. This
latest edition also includes completely rewritten chapters on the
history of the language and the emergence of a standard, alongside
a justification for the change from RP to GB. A further bonus to
this important text is its extensive and attractive new Companion
Website (www.routledge.com/cw/cruttenden), which now includes
moment-by-moment commentaries on videos showing the articulation of
all GB consonants and vowels in spoken phrases, as well as
cross-referencing between the book and these videos. The Companion
Website also includes new recordings of Old English, Middle
English, and Early Modern English, and features links to recordings
of recent and current GB with comments and transcriptions.
Comprehensive yet accessible, Gimson's Pronunciation of English
remains the indispensable reference book for anyone for anyone with
an interest in English phonetics.

When published in 1986, this book was the first to survey intonation in all its aspects, both in English and universally. In this updated edition, while the basic descriptive facts of the form and use of intonation are presented in the British nuclear tone tradition, there is nevertheless extensive comparison with other theoretical frameworks, in particular with the ToBI framework, which has become widespread in the United States. The author has expanded the sections on historical background, different theoretical approaches and sociolinguistic variation. Intonation remains a basic reference book for linguists, phoneticians, speech therapists and all those concerned with speech in any way.
