Ralphie the border collie seemed to the operators of Gabriel's
Creek Golf Course to have come out of nowhere to become their
course mascot. This 18-hole track wasn't listed anywhere when Chris
Collins looked for someplace to play the last round of golf of his
life. When old, worn road signs draw him to this uncharted arena,
it seems perhaps destiny has brought them together. With Ralphie as
his guide through the round, Collins experiences the magic of
Gabriel's Creek. Along the way, he meets friends and foes of his
past at memorable holes across two continents. Is it time travel or
just the enchantment of Gabriel's Creek? Through an emotional day,
his inspirational escapades provide the reminder that we should all
treat each day as a gift. The 18th hole is more than the end of the
round, as Collins finds that Gabriel's Creek Golf Course exists in
neither the earthly world nor the next, but somewhere in between.
The exhibited works of Kurt Jackson (b.1961) do not necessarily
reveal his day-to-day working practice. Behind his finished
canvases are hundreds of sketchbooks borne out of his continual
routine of making drawings, marks, notes, poems and scribbles. This
book, newly available in paperback, examines the importance of the
sketchbook to Jackson. For Jackson, sketchbooks are vital to the
development and completion of his paintings. Often sketching while
a painting evolves, the artist values each medium equally - the
pages of his sketchbooks reveal how the hastily executed images can
help him to work out what he wants to achieve on canvas, or simply
capture a spontaneous image when there is not enough time to paint
or draw properly. Illustrating mundane daily events and happenings
as well as key moments, journeys and the overlapping ongoing
project work, Jackson's sketchbooks are key to understanding his
inspirations as an artist. Drawing on a selection of 20
sketchbooks, of differing sizes and a variety of media, this
fascinating publication provides a rare insight in to the mind of a
highly creative and original artist.
Twenty years in print, The Thames & Hudson Dictionary of
Graphic Design and Designers contains around 750 entries offering
detailed information on every important graphic designer, movement,
agency, practice and publication from 1840 up to the present day.
The dictionary gives clear and accessible definitions, from
technical minutiae of typography to computer-aided design and
printing. Cross-references make navigating between entries simple.
The endmatter contains a handy bibliography of key texts and
recommended reading, as well as a timeline that puts the most
influential individuals, developments and movements in
chronological order. This third edition contains over 200 new,
updated or expanded entries (as well as 45 new illustrations, 22 in
colour) on the latest designers, terms and influences; content that
ranges from Adobe InDesign to Manga, and from Chip Kidd to Marian
Bantjes. Redesigned and re-typeset throughout, the book remains an
indispensable reference tool to all students and practitioners of
graphic design.
