This is the stoy of The Teacher to The Beatles told in his own
evocative words with the help of his boyhood friend and rock &
roll fan turned author Alan Mann. The book was put together by Alan
following a period of intense collaboration between the two men,
which only came to a conclusion in 2011. Thereafter the book was
delayed because of legal complications which thankfully no longer
apply. Certainly, it is the nearest to an autobiography of Tony
Sheridan, singer-songwriter and guitar genius, that is ever likely
to appear. A hard musical taskmaster, he was worshipped by his
fellow musicians, yet somehow still managed to remain an elusive
and enigmatic figure unknown to the wider musical public. There was
much more to the man than his brief time spent with The Beatles in
Hamburg, and the reader will hopefully be inspired to seek out
other recordings from a career that spanned well over 50 years.
Shortly before the publication of this book, the sad news arrived
that Tony Sheridan has passed away in Germany. It is therefore
dedicated to his memory, and it is hoped will prove a lasting
legacy to the man, his music, and the times in which he lived.
The achievements of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly have been
extensively documented, but until now little if anything has been
known about the many ways in which their lives were interconnected.
For the first time anywhere, rock & roll expert Alan Mann takes
a detailed look at each artist's early years, comparing their
backgrounds and influences, chronicling all their meetings and
examining the many amazing parallels in their lives, careers and
tragic deaths. Contains many rare and previously unpublished
photographs. A fascinating, thought-provoking insight into two of
the greatest popular musical figures of the Twentieth Century.
The plane crash of 3 February 1959 which claimed the life of Buddy
Holly was both a human tragedy, and a tragedy for rock'n'roll. In a
little under two years, Holly and his band -- the Crickets -- had
become major stars, thanks to their high standard of musicianship
and a string of memorable hits including 'That'll Be The Day',
'Rave On', 'Peggy Sue', 'Oh Boy!' and 'Heartbeat', only for their
career to be cruelly cut short. After his death, Holly's records
continued to sell in quantity for many years -- a testament to his
massive influence and the lasting popularity of his music. It may
sound strange now, but in those monochrome, pre-Internet days very
little was actually known about the singer with the unusual name
and the hiccup in his voice -- a situation that persisted until the
appearance of John Goldrosen's pioneering biography in 1975. Since
then, much more information has been uncovered, thanks to decades
of research by dedicated fans. This book draws together a mass of
Holly facts and info from a variety of published sources, as well
as the author's own original research, and presents them in an
easy-to-use encyclopaedic format. Now in its third edition, it has
proved to be a popular and valuable reference work on this seminal
rock'n'roller. This is a book that every Holly fan will want to
keep at his fingertips. A book about a musical genius who will
never be forgotten.
"Sin isn't relevant anymore." Alan Mann takes seriously this
often-heard assertion and instead goes in search of the real plight
at the heart of contemporary western society. What he finds there
is a personal, pervasive, and self-diminishing disease impacting
the lives of millions of people: shame. With this insight,
Atonement for a Sinless Society seeks a fresh encounter with the
biblical narrative, building a more meaningful understanding of the
story of Jesus and his disciples for the world in which we live
and, in doing so, bringing the Christian understanding of atonement
into the twenty-first century.
A fresh---and perhaps controversial---look at Jesus by one of
Britain s most respected Christian authors. Who is the real Jesus?
Do we remake him in our own image and then wonder why our
spirituality is less than life-changing and exciting? Steve
Chalke---a high-profile visionary in the United Kingdom and an
evangelical recognized not only by Christians but by the general
public as well---believes that the real Jesus is deeply
challenging. And each new generation must grapple with the question
of who he is, because only through a constant study of Jesus are we
able to discover God himself. The Lost Message of Jesus is written
to stir thoughtful debate and pose fresh questions that will help
create a deeper understanding of Jesus and his message. It is an
encounter with the real Jesus of his world---not the Jesus we try
to mold to ours. Themes include: *The Kingdom of God---shalom---is
available to everyone now, through Jesus *The world outside your
own church needs to hear of the depth of God s love and suffering
*Jesus was a radical and a revolutionary *Jesus offers immediate
forgiveness, without cost, to anyone *Jesus shows us repentance isn
t a guilt-laden list of dos and don ts, but an inspirational vision
of a new way to live Focusing on some of the key episodes, events,
and issues of Jesus life, we will see how too often the message we
preach today has been influenced more by the culture we live in
than the radical, life-changing, world-shaping message Jesus shared
two thousand years ago."
