Originally published in the 1950s by George Allen & Unwin. When
originally published, these volumes were making available very rare
material (tracts and manuscripts etc.) for the very first time.
Most of the documents exist in their original state as difficult to
locate, read and understand - for example: there are only two
copies of A Plaine Refutation (1591) and two copies of A Brief
Discoverie of the False Church. It is impossible to understand the
rise and development of Independency and of the democratic idea in
religion and in politics without reflection upon some of this rare
material.
Robert Harrison and Robert Browne were the initiators of the
principles of English Separatism and Congregationalism. Unlike the
Presbytero-Puritans, these nonconformists sought to establish local
churches that were independent of the state. Although they
encountered fierce opposition from the clergy, state officials and
Anglican bishops, they persisted in their practices. As a result,
the ideas of these two men profoundly influenced the Puritan
movement both of England and America. In this volume, scarce and
little known works, as well as new material derived from
manuscripts and tracts are collected into one volume.

Originally published in 1920, this book presents an account of the
Brownist movement in Norwich and Norfolk at around 1580. Notes are
incorporated throughout and previously unseen historical sources
are discussed. This book will be of value to anyone with an
interest in the Brownists and sixteenth-century religious history.
First published in 1920, this book presents an account regarding
the growth of Separatist congregations in London during the period
from 1567 to 1581. The text traces the origins of Separatism,
casting light on its historical context and the key figures
involved in its development. Detailed notes are incorporated
throughout. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest
in British history, Separatism and the history of Christianity.
In the library of St John's College, Cambridge is a manuscript thus
catalogued by M. R. James: 'Certain Slanderous Speeches against the
present Estate of the Church of England, published to the people by
the Precisians, with the particular causes that have so stirred
them, and blasphemous and seditious positions held by them, with
refutations of the same, and an Index of Browne's heresies with
their refutation.' The manuscript is a valuable conspectus of the
state of the controversy between Presbyterian and Episcopalian.
This is Dr Peel's 1953 transcription of the manuscript. In an
introductory essay he argues that the author is Richard Bancroft,
Bishop of London (1597 1604) and Archbishop of Canterbury (1604
10), who played a prominent part in the history of the Church of
England at a critical period, and whom the Presbyterian Andrew
Melville described as 'the capital enemy of all the Reformed
Churches in Europe'.
In 1593, in response to strict censorship in England, English
Puritans in Scotland printed a volume of letters, petitions and
arguments titled Parte of a Register, which was smuggled into
England. Manuscripts for a second book were collected but never
published, and were later acquired by Roger Morrice (1628 1702),
the Puritan diarist. They are now housed at Dr Williams's Library
in London. This is a two-volume study of the 257 documents, which
date from 1570 to 1590. They include Puritan letters, petitions,
arguments and records of persecution by ecclesiastical authorities,
and together constitute valuable evidence of the aims and concerns
of the early Puritan movement. Compiled by the ecclesiastical
historian Albert Peel (1886 1949) and first published in 1915, this
catalogue itemises the contents of the collection. Volume 1
contains an introduction discussing the history of the manuscripts
and the first part of the list of documents.

Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the
1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly
expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable,
