Greek and Latin Literature of the Roman Empire - From Augustus to Justinian (Paperback): Albrecht Dihle Greek and Latin Literature of the Roman Empire - From Augustus to Justinian (Paperback)
Albrecht Dihle; Translated by Manfred Malzahn
R1,599 Discovery Miles 15 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Professor Dihle sees the Greek and Latin literature between the 1st century B.C. and the 6th century A.D. as an organic progression. He builds on Schlegel's observation that art, customs and political life in classical antiquity are inextricably entwined and therefore should not be examined separately. Dihle does not simply consider narrowly defined `literature', but all works of cultural socio-historical significance, including Jewish and Christian literature, philosophy and science. Despite this, major authors like Seneca, Tacitus and Plotinus are considered individually. This work is an authoritative yet personal presentation of seven hundred years of literature.

History of Greek Literature - From Homer to the Hellenistic Period (Hardcover): Clare Krojzl History of Greek Literature - From Homer to the Hellenistic Period (Hardcover)
Clare Krojzl; Albrecht Dihle
R4,006 Discovery Miles 40 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The most up-to-date history of Greek literature from its Homeric origins to the age of Augustus. Greek literary production throughout this period of some eight centuries is embedded in its historical and social context, and Professor Dihle sees this literature as a historical phenomenon, a particular mode of linguistic communication, with its specific forms developing both in an organic way and in response to the changing world around. In this it differs from conventional humanist approaches to Greek and Latin literature which analyse the works as objects of timeless value independent of any historical setting or purpose.
This magisterial survey by one of the leading European authorities on classical literature will establish itself, as it already has in Germany, as the standard account of the subject.

Albrecht Dihle; Translated by Manfred Malzahn
R4,047 Discovery Miles 40 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first in-depth guide to Greek and Latin literature between the 1st century BC and the 6th century AD. Working from Friedrich Schlegel's observation that art, customs and political life in classical antiquity are closely intertwined, Albrecht Dihle produces a history which encompasses not only literature but all works of cultural and socio-historical significance, including Jewish and Christian literature. His study also shows how the mutual interpenetration of Greek and Roman culture during the Empire, and especially during the period of Christianization, made possible the formation of a unified and vastly influential classical culture.
Dihle discusses poetry and prose, letters and scholarly investigations, philosophy and rhetoric, historical writing and jurisprudence, giving individual attention to major authors like Seneca, Tacitus, Plotinus and Augustine, as well as other writers who made significant contributions to their fields and have been unjustly forgotten. Also addressed are the exact sciences--geography, medicine, mathematics and technology.
As the work of a single author, "Greek and Latin Literature of the Roman Empire" is a towering achievement--an authoritative yet personal presentation of 700 years of cultural life. This book provides unprecedented synoptic treatment of an unusually rich period of history.

Hellas und der Orient - Phasen wechselseitiger Rezeption (German, Hardcover): Albrecht Dihle Hellas und der Orient - Phasen wechselseitiger Rezeption (German, Hardcover)
Albrecht Dihle; Introduction by Reinhard Feldmeier
R2,014 Discovery Miles 20 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This lecture addresses the question of when and under what conditions the reception of Oriental traditions took place in ancient Greek culture. As a result of spectacular theories about the Oriental origins of Homer's epics, the question has once again become an issue of current interest, arousing controversial debate. Albrecht Dihle covers the relevant material step by step: from the Oriental loanwords used in Greek to the art-historical influences of the classical period, right up to the philosophical debates and the mystery cults of the later period. In doing so, his portrayal of the meeting and reciprocal exchange between the East and West in the course of ancient Greek history is at once both vivid and differentiated.

This splendid book accompanied an exhibition first shown in Sao Paolo (Brasil) in 2006 which is now on in the Berlin located Pergamon Museum. Almost 200 pieces of art from the Berlin antiques collection are featured in essays, concise short descriptions as well as brilliantly photographed. The catalogue opens a great insight into ancient Greek mythology and its transformation into the Roman Empire's time, as seen from the latest state in research. The different generations of Olympus gods and goddesses are introduced with the background of antique believe, cult practice and sacred locations. The Berlin Pergamon Museum is undoubtedly one of the best equipped and best displayed museums in the world on old Greek sculpture and culture.
