Dialectical behavior therapy has revolutionized cognitive behavioral therapies with constructs such as mindfulness and acceptance now permeating behavioral approaches. Adolescents differ from adult clients with regard to emotional and cognitive developmental level and context: they overwhelmingly attend school, and reside with their families and depend on them for daily functioning, including for getting to therapy. Thus, we considered developmentally relevant as well as family-based targets, cognitive processing and capability differences, distinct liability issues, and interventions with their environments. Our adapted adolescent skills handouts are being used in multiple research settings; many clinical settings around the world employ some version of our materials. The publication of this manual makes them more widely available along with group management strategies and skills teaching notes to assist the DBT skills trainer working with adolescents--
*First nonclinical application of DBT skills: a universal curriculum designed for school use with 11- to 17-year-olds (grades 6-12). *Brings DBT skills to a broader audience by embedding them in social-emotional learning (SEL); both DBT and SEL are in demand. *Allows teens to build and practice critical skills needed for mindfulness, emotion regulation, and decision making. *From uniquely experienced authors with a strong track record; foreword by DBT developer Marsha Linehan. * 30 teacher lesson plans include explicit instructions and reproducible student handouts. *Designed for school psychologists, counselors, and teachers; can be easily integrated into an existing multi-tiered system of support.
*Outstanding sales potential: shows how DBT, a proven nondrug therapy for suicidal adults, can be adapted to help adolescents. *From coauthor Marsha Linehan, bestselling author of DBT Skills Training Manual. *Suicide is the third leading cause of death among American teens: treatments are needed and therapists are eager to use DBT with this population. *Highly practical: includes cases, handouts, sample dialogues, and clinical advice. *Features a completely new DBT skills training module specifically for troubled teens and their families.
*Excellent potential: clinicians have expressed great need for a DBT book on teens. *DBT is the hottest treatment available for emotional dysregulation, which is at the core of many adolescent problems. *Complete: includes teaching notes, discussion points, strategies for structuring skills groups, and teen-friendly reproducibles. *Covering the same core skills as Linehan's bestselling DBT Skills Training Manual, 2e, this book includes an additional module and important age-appropriate modifications. *Ideal for use in residential, inpatient, outpatient, hospital, or clinical settings. *From the authors of the successful Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents.
Filling a tremendous need, this highly practical book adapts the proven techniques of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to treatment of multi-problem adolescents at highest risk for suicidal behavior and self-injury. The authors are master clinicians who take the reader step by step through understanding and assessing severe emotional dysregulation in teens and implementing individual, family, and group-based interventions. Insightful guidance on everything from orientation to termination is enlivened by case illustrations and sampleialogues. Appendices feature 30 mindfulness exercises as well as lecture notes and 12 reproducible handouts for "Walking the Middle Path," a completely new DBT skills training module for adolescents and their families.
