Il presente saggio mostra l'evoluzione storica dei gruppi islamisti radicali, dalla loro nascita fino agli attentati dell'11 Settembre 2001. L'analisi parte dall'approfondimento dei primi gruppi terroristici islamici, sorti nel Medioevo,con il noto nome di Setta degli Assassini, fino alla nascita di Al-Qaeda nel periodo della Guerra Fredda. Obiettivo dell'analisi e quello di mettere in risalto le vicende storiche che hanno generato il terrorismo islamico, ma anche fare luce sulle strategie di guerra asimmetrica e le tattiche operative di contro-terrorismo messe in atto dall'Occidente.
