Once he invited me to the village Koutchouk-Koy where he had a tiny
strip of land and a white, two-storied house. There, while showing
me his "estate," he began to speak with animation: "If I had plenty
of money, I should build a sanatorium here for invalid village
teachers. You know, I would put up a large, bright building-very
bright, with large windows and lofty rooms. I would have a fine
library, different musical instruments, bees, a vegetable garden,
an orchard.... There would be lectures on agriculture,
mythology.... Teachers ought to know everything, everything, my
dear fellow." He was suddenly silent, coughed, looked at me out of
the corners of his eyes, and smiled that tender, charming smile of
his which attracted one so irresistibly to him and made one listen
so attentively to his words.
"Write, write as much as possible"--he would say to young
novelists. "It does not matter if it does not come off. Later on it
will come off. The chief thing is, do not waste your youth and
elasticity. It's now the time for working. See, you write superbly,
but your vocabulary is small. You must acquire words and turns of
speech, and for this you must write every day."

Aleksandr Ivanovich Kuprin was a Russian writer, pilot, explorer
and adventurer who is perhaps best known for his masterpiece The
Duel. Yama tells the story of the everyday life of the prostitutes
in Odessa. This book is an overwhelming, truthful and staggering
indictment of the immemorial evil of prostitution. No sheepish
morality is here, but sheer, stark truth.

Aleksandr Ivanovich Kuprin (1870-1938) was Russian novelist and
short-story writer. He was an army officer for several years before
he resigned to pursue a writing career, and was a friend of Maxim
Gorky. He won fame with The Duel (1905), a novel of protest against
the Russian military system. In 1909, Yama: The Pit, his novel
dealing with prostitution in Odessa, created a sensation. Kuprin
left Russia after the revolution but returned in 1937. Some of his
best short stories of action and adventure appear in The Garnet
Bracelet, originally published in 1917.
The tales selected here are taken from various volumes, and two of
them, "The Elephant" and "The White Poodle," from a volume
specially designed by Kuprin for reading aloud to children. The
others are: A Slav Soul; The Song and The Dance; Easter Day; The
Idiot; The Picture; Hamlet; Mechanical Justice; The Last Word;
Dogs' Happiness; A Clump of Lilacs; Anathema; Tempting Providence;
Cain. Aleksandr Ivanovich Kuprin (1870-1938) was Russian novelist
