In this volume of The Photography Workshop Series, Graciela
Iturbide-known for her portraits and landscapes imbued with poetic
ambiguity and documentary truth-explores photographing in ways that
employ a deeply personal vision, while also reflecting subjects'
rich cultural backgrounds. Aperture Foundation works with the
world's top photographers to distill their creative approaches,
teachings, and insights on photography-offering the workshop
experience in a book. Our goal is to inspire photographers of all
levels who wish to improve their work, as well as readers
interested in deepening their understanding of the art of
photography. Through images and words, Iturbide shares her creative
process and artistic inspirations, and discusses a wide range of
issues, from portraying spirituality in photographs and engaging
with different cultures to the importance of curiosity.
Addressing the current dearth of available literature on this
topic, the editors use a range of international case studies to
explore street vending and informal economies which continue to be,
especially in developing countries, a vital economic driver. This
volume collects essays from authors around the world about the
markets and vendors they know best, including studies of USA,
China, Mexico, Turkey. The contributors speak of the struggles that
vendors have faced to legitimize their activity, the role that they
play in helping societies adapt to and survive catastrophes as well
as the practical roles that they play in both the local and global
social and economic system. As well as highlighting the importance
of street markets as a phenomenon of interest in itself to a
growing body of scholarship, this study demonstrates how an
analysis of street vending can provide insights not only into
economic anthropology, but also urban studies, post modernism,
spatial geography, political sociology and globalization theory.

Pragmatism is experiencing a resurgence in law, philosophy and
social science, with pragmatists seeking a consistent,
comprehensive and productive understanding of social life. In its
four sections Renascent Pragmatism aids the reinvigoration of
pragmatism as an important intellectual tradition and contributor
to inquiry and change in social life. The book is a first of its
kind for combining essays on theory, method, public policy and
empirical scholarship, presenting contributions from philosophers,
legal scholars and social scientists. Throughout the book, the
concrete linkage between policy, theory and method is emphasized,
while recognizing the philosophical tradition in which the
inquiries and prescriptions rest.

Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship examines business formation
and success among Latinos by identifying arrangements that enhance
entrepreneurship and by understanding the sociopolitical contexts
that shape entrepreneurial trajectories. While it is well known
that Latinos make up one of the largest and fastest growing
populations in the U.S., Latino-owned businesses are now outpacing
this population growth and the startup business growth of all other
demographic groups in the country. The institutional arrangements
shaping business formation are no level playing field. Minority
entrepreneurs face racism and sexism, but structural barriers are
not the only obstacles that matter; there are agentic barriers and
coethnics present challenges as well as support to each other. Yet
minorities engage in business formation, and in doing so, change
institutional arrangements by transforming the attitudes of society
and the practices of policymakers. The economic future of the
country is tied to the prospects of Latinos forming and growing
business. The diversity of Latino experience constitutes an
economic resource for those interested in forming businesses that
appeal to native-born citizens and fellow immigrants alike, ranging
from local to national to international markets. This book makes a
substantial contribution to the literature on entrepreneurship and
wealth creation by focusing on Latinos, a population vastly
understudied on these topics, by describing processes and outcomes
for Latino entrepreneurs. Unfairly, the dominant story of
Latinos-especially Mexican Americans-is that of dispossession and
its consequences. Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship makes
clear the undiminished ambitions of Latinos as well as the
transformative relationships among people, their practices, and the
political context in which they operate. The reality of Latino
entrepreneurs demands new attention and focus.

From 19 November 2013 to 6 April 2014, the Fondation Cartier pour
l'art contemporain will be showing America Latina 1960-2013,
organized in collaboration with the Amparo Museum in Puebla
(Mexico). The exhibition offers a new perspective on Latin American
photography from 1960 to today, focusing on the relationship
between text and the photographic image. Bringing together more
than seventy artists from eleven different countries, it shows the
great diversity of photographic practices by presenting the work of
documentary photographers as well as that of contemporary artists
who appropriate the medium in different ways. This catalogue of the
exhibition offers a vast panorama of the artistic production of the
last fifty years. Including over 400 black-and-white and color
reproductions, it explores the wealth of photographic work while
shedding light on the historical and artistic context that spawned
it. In addition to scholarly texts and artist bios, descriptions of
works and a detailed timeline provide a deeper understanding of the
visual languages specific to the continent. Chronicling the vital
legacy of Latin American artists, the book shows the scope of their
influence beyond their cultural and geographical territory.
