This edition first published in 1960. The revival of interest in
the thought of Burke was one of the justifications for the
publication of a second edition of Professor Cobban's study of the
political and social ideas of Burke and his closest disciples, the
Lake Poets. Burke's thought has both historical and permanent
significance: fundamentally his works are as relevant today as when
they were first written. In this book Burke's ideas are discussed
without the uncritical adulation they receive in some quarters, and
those of the Lake Poets without the undue depreciation from which
they used to suffer. This title will be of great interest to
students of politics, philosophy and history.
First published in 1934, and revised and expanded in 1964, this
book is the standard work on the political thought of Rousseau. It
was acclaimed by English reviewers as 'an excellently arranged,
lucidly written, unbiased account of Rousseau's political theory',
a 'scholarly book, distinguished for lucidity both in thought and
style', and a 'first-rate book in defence of the essential sanity
of Rousseau's thought'.

Alfred Cobban's Social Interpretation of the French Revolution is one of the acknowledged classics of postwar historiography. Cobban saw the French Revolution as central to the "grand narrative of modern history," but provided a salutary corrective to prevalent social explanations of its origins and development. A generation later this powerful historical intervention is now reissued with a new introduction by the distinguished scholar Gwynne Lewis. It provides students with both a context for Cobban's arguments, and assesses the course of Revolutionary studies in the wake of The Social Interpretation.
Alfred Cobban's The Social Interpretation of the French Revolution
is one of the acknowledged classics of post-war historiography.
This 'revisionist' analysis of the French Revolution caused a
furore on first publication in 1964, challenging as it did
established orthodoxies during the crucial period of the Cold War.
Cobban saw the French Revolution as central to the 'grand narrative
of modern history', but provided a salutary corrective to many
celebrated social explanations, determinist and otherwise, of its
origins and development. A generation later this concise but
powerful intervention was reissued in this 1999 edition with an
introduction by Gwynne Lewis, providing students with both a
context for Cobban's own arguments, and assessing the course of
Revolutionary studies in the wake of The Social Interpretation.
This book remains a handbook of revisionism for Anglo-Saxon
scholars, and is essential reading for all students of French
history at undergraduate level and above.
This is a new release of the original 1960 edition.
