The foggy streets of London have fallen prey to the 'Avenger' - an unknown killer whose victims are all blonde women. In 'Dial M for Murder' (1954), adapted from the stage play by Frederick Knott, former tennis pro Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) hatches a cunning plot to get rid of his socialite wife, Margot (Grace Kelly), when he discovers that she has been unfaithful. Wendice blackmails a corrupt former schoolmate into murdering her but the fellow bungles the job and Margot, having killed her would-be assailant in self-defence, then finds herself under suspicion of premeditated murder. In 'Strangers On a Train' (1951), based on Patricia Highsmith's novel, tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets Bruno Antony (Robert Walker) by chance in a train carriage. After some idle chat in which it transpires that each man has someone in their lives they would like to dispose of, Bruno proposes that he kills Guy's wife, in return for Guy murdering Bruno's father. Guy is appalled, but when his wife is murdered he realises that Bruno is intent on carrying out the 'deal', whether Guy wants to or not. In 'North By Northwest' (1959) advertising executive Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) is lunching in a restaurant with his mother when he mistakenly answers a page for one George Kaplan. He soon finds himself on the run across the country, being pursued by enemies of the government who are convinced that he is a secret agent. He finds a friend in Eve Kendall (Eve Marie Saint), who helps conceal him during a perilous train journey, but soon discovers she is not all that she seems...

Lockwood stars as Lady Skelton, an aristocrat who attempts to relieve the tedium of her day-to-day life by secretly acting as a highway robber. In 'Love Story' (1944), Lissa (Lockwood) discovers she only has a short time to live, so travels to Cornwall for a final fling. In 'Bank Holiday' (1938), a group of people set off on an August bank holiday, including a raucous Cockney family, a would-be beauty queen, and two young lovers - whose relationship starts to come apart when one has to deal with a bereavement at the hospital where she works. In 'Give Us the Moon' (1944), a young man, Sascha (Vic Oliver), joins a group called 'The Elephants' whose principle is to abide by a complete disregard for work. However chaos ensues when the group decides to help run the hotel owned by Sascha's father. In 'Highly Dangerous' (1950), when British Intelligence discovers that an Iron Curtain country is developing insects as weapons, they dispatch entomologist Frances Gray (Lockwood) to get into the country and collect specimens. However her cover is almost immediately blown on her arrival and her contact is murdered. Finally, in 'The Lady Vanishes' (1938), when the elderly Miss Froy (Dame May Whitty) goes missing on a train bound for England, her friend Iris Henderson (Lockwood) sets out to find her. However, Iris' attempts are immediately frustrated by her fellow passengers, who question whether Miss Froy ever even existed. Only music scholar Gilbert Redman (Michael Redgrave) is prepared to believe Iris, and together they set about getting to the bottom of the mystery.

When he arrives he meets powerful landowner and ex-convict Sam Flusky (Joseph Cotten), who wants to do a business deal with him. Alfred Hitchcock directed this adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier novel - his last British film - before leaving for Hollywood and a contract with David O. Selznick. Young orphan Mary (Maureen O'Hara) arrives in 18th century Cornwall to live with her Uncle Joss (Leslie Banks), the landlord of Jamaica Inn. After finding work as a barmaid, Mary discovers that Joss commands a band of pirates who smuggle contraband from wrecked ships. Mary is further unnerved by the ever-present Justice of the Peace, Sir Humphrey Pengallan (Charles Laughton).
Actor Richard Todd presents this documentary on the iconic Elstree Studios, where many classic English films were made between 1927 and the programme's recording in the 1950s. As well as relating the history of the studios, situated near the towns of Borehamwood and Elstree in Hertfordshire, the documentary features footage from over 40 films made there, including the first feature film produced in the studios, 'The White Sheik' (1927), and Alfred Hitchcock's 'Blackmail' (1929).

Tommy Handley compères this collection of musical and comedy sketches featuring popular vaudeville entertainers including Cicely Courtneidge, Anna May Wong and John Longden. The premise of the piece is that Handley is acting as the presenter of a live broadcast. 19 sketches are put forth in all, including a recurring joke about an actor whose attempts to make it into a Shakespeare play are continually thwarted. A young Alfred Hitchcock was involved in the project and directed some of the sketch sequences.
