1923. Hamlin Garland was born near La Crosse, Wisconsin and lived
in the area for nine years before his family moved to South Dakota.
As an adult he lived in major cities throughout the United States
but visited his birthplace often. In 1922 he received a Pulitzer
Prize for A Daughter of the Middle Border, and was also director of
the American Academy of Arts and Letters for a number of years.
Garland wanted to write regional literature, and he is famous for
his realistic portrayal of Wisconsin rural life. Son of the Middle
Border is his autobiography and considered by some to be a
masterpiece.

1907. An American detective-story writer, Green's many thrillers
were characterized by logical construction and a knowledge of
criminal law. The book begins: I am not without self-control, yet
when Miss Davies entered the room with that air of importance she
invariably assumes when she has an unusually fine position to
offer, I could not hide all traces of my anxiety. I needed a
position, needed it badly, while the others-But her eyes are on our
faces, she is scanning us all with that close and calculating gaze
which lets nothing escape. She has passed me by-my heart does down,
down-when suddenly her look returns and she singles me out. See

1905. Another heartwarming tale from the American educator and
writer, famous for her children's works including Rebecca of
Sunnybrook Farm. The story begins: Edgewood, like all the other
villages along the banks of the Saco, is full of sunny slopes and
leafy hollows. There are little, rounded, green-clad hillocks that
might, like their scriptural sisters, skip with joy; and there are
grand, rocky hills tufted with gaunt pine trees-these leading the
eye to the splendid heights of a neighbor State, where snow-crowned
peaks tower in the blue distance, sweeping the horizon in a long
line of majesty. See other titles by this author available from

1907. The mystery begins: A city of hills with a fringe of houses
crowning the lower heights; half-mountains rising bare in the
background and becoming real mountains as they stretched away in
the distance to right and left; a confused mass of building coming
to the water's edge on the flat; a forest of masts, ships swinging
in the stream, and the streaked, yellow, gray-green water of the
bay taking a cold light from the setting sun as it struggled
through the wisps of fog that fluttered above the serrated skyline
of the city-these were my first impressions of San Francisco.

1909. Novelist whose career began in the greeting card business.
The book begins: Miss Jane Jay used to think that she discovered
Paul Phillips: but really and truly Doctor Lavendar saw him before
she did, and so did her sister, Miss Henrietta. It was one hot
August afternoon that the old minister, passing the open door of
Van Horn's tavern, saw a lazy, sweltering crowd gathered inside,
where, it seemed, some sort of entertainment was going on. Doctor
Lavendar stopped and looked in, his hands on either side of the
doorway, his hat pushed back, his face red with heat. See other
