If at the end of its quest, a philosophy denies reality, it is
deluded. If it denies knowledge, it has lost its claim to instruct.
If it denies morality, it is merely decadence trying to find
respectability. If it denies God, it is simply and profoundly
uninformed. Millions have left the Christian faith without ever
having heard its true message. Millions more have never been
exposed to the philosophical beauty of Christian Idealism. I
challenge you, dear reader, to consider the ideas put forward in
this philosophical tract. The heresy of materialism has risen to
dominate the world. Everyone seems to sense that something is
terribly wrong with the course of civilization but few understand
exactly what it is that is destroying society. Materialism,
philosophic materialism, is the problem.

As John Henry Newman reflected on 'The Idea of a University' more
than a century and a half ago, Bradley C. S. Watson brings together
some of the nation's most eminent thinkers on higher education to
reflect on the nature and purposes of the American university
today. They detail the life and rather sad times of the American
university, its relationship to democracy, and the place of the
liberal arts within it. Their mordant reflections paint a picture
of the American university in crisis. But they also point toward a
renewal of the university by redirecting it toward those things
that resist the passions of the moment, or the pull of mere
utility. This book is essential reading for thoughtful citizens,
scholars, and educational policymakers.
This book gathers selected peer-reviewed contributions to the 1st
European Congress on Biomedical and Veterinary Engineering,
BioMedVetMech 2022, held on October 1â3, 2022, in Zagreb,
Croatia. It offers a timely snapshot of research findings
and advances technologies in the area of biomechanics,
rehabilitation and surgery. It covers applications of
brain-computer interface, virtual reality and functional electrical
stimulation, among others. Â
In a time where US deployments are uncertain, this book shows how
US service members can either build the necessary support to
sustain their presence or create added animosity towards the
military presence. The United States stands at a crossroads in
international security. The backbone of its international position
for the last 70 years has been the massive network of overseas
military deployments. However, the US now faces pressures to limit
its overseas presence and spending. In Beyond the Wire, Michael
Allen, Michael Flynn, Carla Martinez Machain, and Andrew Stravers
argue that the US has entered into a "Domain of Competitive
Consent" where the longevity of overseas deployments relies upon
the buy-in from host-state populations and what other major powers
offer in security guarantees. Drawing from three years of surveys
and interviews across fourteen countries, they demonstrate that a
key component of building support for the US mission is the service
members themselves as they interact with local community members.
Highlighting both the positive contact and economic benefits that
flow from military deployments and the negative interactions like
crime and anti-base protests, this book shows in the most rigorous
and concrete way possible how US policy on the ground shapes its
ability to advance its foreign policy goals.
Nature Tales is a charming collection of encounters with the
natural world from historic greats to modern household names, from
Wildlife Trusts supporters to leading naturalists, such as: Roger
Deakin, Richard Mabey, Simon Barnes, Gilbert White, John Clare,
Joseph Banks, William Cobbett, Simon King, Nick Baker. Including
beautifully drawn illustrations and a foreword from Sir David
Attenborough, Nature Tales is a charming celebration of Britain's
wildlife and countryside.

Logic Primer presents a rigorous introduction to natural deduction
systems of sentential and first-order logic. Logic Primer presents
a rigorous introduction to natural deduction systems of sentential
and first-order logic. The text is designed to foster the
student-instructor relationship. The key concepts are laid out in
concise definitions and comments, with the expectation that the
instructor will elaborate upon them. New to the second edition is
the addition of material on the logic of identity in chapters 3 and
4. An innovative interactive Web site, consisting of a "Logic
Daemon" and a "Quizmaster," encourages students to formulate their
own proofs and links them to appropriate explanations in the book.
"Tony Allen" is the autobiography of legendary Nigerian drummer
Tony Allen, the rhythmic engine of Fela Kuti's Afrobeat.
Conversational, inviting, and packed with telling anecdotes,
Allen's memoir is based on hundreds of hours of interviews with the
musician and scholar Michael E. Veal. It spans Allen's early years
and career playing highlife music in Lagos; his fifteen years with
Fela, from 1964 until 1979; his struggles to form his own bands in
Nigeria; and his emigration to France.
Allen embraced the drum set, rather than African handheld drums,
early in his career, when drum kits were relatively rare in Africa.
His story conveys a love of his craft along with the specifics of
his practice. It also provides invaluable firsthand accounts of the
explosive creativity in postcolonial African music, and the
personal and artistic dynamics in Fela's Koola Lobitos and Africa
70, two of the greatest bands to ever play African music.
Examining globally invasive alien birds, the first part of this
book provides an account of 32 global avian invasive species (as
listed by the Invasive Species Specialist Group, ISSG). It acts as
a one stop reference volume; it assesses current invasive status
for each bird species, including details of physical description,
diet, introduction and invasion pathways, breeding behaviour,
natural habitat. It also looks at the environmental impact of each
species, as well as current and future control methods. Full colour
photographs assist with species identification and global
distribution maps give a visual representation of the current known
distributions of these species. The second part of the book
discusses the biogeographical aspects of avian invasions,
highlighting current and emerging invasive species across different
regions of the world. The third section considers the impact of
invasive species on native communities, problems associated with
invasive bird management and the use of citizen science in the
study of invasive birds.
This is a volume of previously unpublished research studies conducted during the Management in the 1990s project at the Sloan School. It is a companion volume to the principal book of the project, The Corporation of the 1990s: Information Technology and Organizational Transformation (OUP, 1991). This book is organized into three sections: the IT Revolution; Strategic Options; and The Organization and Management Response. Authors of the studies are among the most prominent of the Sloan School people, including Eric Von Hippel, Edgar Schein, Michael Piore, Paul Osterman, and Thomas Kochan. There are introductions to the volume and to the sections.
Environmental sustainability and human cultural sustainability are
inextricably linked. Reversing damaging human impact on the global
environment is ultimately a cultural question, and as with
politics, the answers are often profoundly local. Cultural
Sustainabilities presents twenty-three essays by musicologists and
ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, folklorists, ethnographers,
documentary filmmakers, musicians, artists, and activists, each
asking a particular question or presenting a specific local case
study about cultural and environmental sustainability. Contributing
to the environmental humanities, the authors embrace and even
celebrate human engagement with ecosystems, though with a profound
sense of collective responsibility created by the emergence of the
Anthropocene. Contributors: Aaron S. Allen, Michael B. Bakan,
Robert Baron, Daniel Cavicchi, Timothy J. Cooley, Mark F. DeWitt,
