scheinbar nur Beiwerk, giebt aber der Ballade ihren Hauptreiz. Es
hat auch mehrfach auf die folgenden Dichter gewirkt, w hrend die
eigentliche Fabel keine Nachahmer fand. So beschreibt Walter Scott
im Lord der Jnseln" (I, 21) ein gef hrdetes Schiff an einer phosph
rescirenden Meeresstelle, umkreist vom elfischen Licht" der Wogen,
und bezieht sich dabei ausdr cklich auf Coleridge. Auch Byron im
Weltuntergangstraum Finsterni " h tte schwerlich den R ckfall in
das Chaos durch das Bild der faulenden See mit den verschmachteten
Seglern ausgemalt, wenn ihm nicht der Alte Matrose" vorgeschwebt h
tte. Mit feiner Vorsicht ist die Wundergeschichte so eingekleidet,
da sie nicht der Dichter in eigener Person, sondern der Alte
