Ha habido multiples conjeturas y teorias sobre la verdadera identidad de Fernandez de Avellaneda. Martin de Riquer sugirio que se trataba de Jeronimo de Pasamonte, soldado y escritor contemporaneo de Cervantes que combatio en Lepanto, como el, y autor de una Vida, que no llego a ser impresa. Otra hipotesis afirma que se trata de Cristobal Suarez de Figueroa. Figueroa se desplazo a Barcelona en un intento desesperado de embarcarse con el sequito del conde de Lemos pero no consiguio ser tenido en cuenta. Ofendido por las intrigas de Cervantes incluyo en su libro Espana defendida unas durisimas estrofas contra este. Cervantes, a su vez, lo satirizo en el episodio de la imprenta de Barcelona, aludiendo a cierto traductor del italiano.
