PREFACE: The plan of this work differs from that of the ordinary
Botany. The method pursued is to introduce the pupil at once to the
study of the plant itself, by means of elaborate illustrations, and
living specimens. The parts and functions, together with the
generic and specific characters of each plant, are pointed out and
described. The thing being seen is then named. No new term is
introduced until a necessity arises for its use....Many of the
earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and
before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are
republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality,
modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923. This book
may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages,
poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the
original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. We
believe this work is culturally important, and despite the
imperfections, have elected to bring it back into print as part of
our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works
worldwide. We appreciate your understanding of the imperfections in
the preservation process, and hope you enjoy this valuable book.
