St. Alphonsus Liguori's Moral Theology has long been praised and
held in the highest regard by the Church, covering every moral
question of his day. Mediatrix Press is pleased to bring you the
first English Translation of this excellent work, once widely read
but relegated to obscurity on account of the loss of Latin fluency
in Western Society. Volume 1 embraces the first three Books of
Alphonsus' Moral Theology. Bl. Pope Pius IX declared: "Focusing his
mind on the glory of God and the spiritual salvation of men he
wrote many books, related with holy erudition and piety, whose
opinions were between those embraced by both more lax and rigid
theologians, to fortify the safe path by which the confessors of
Christ's faithful could advance without dashing their foot upon a
stone. [Apostolic Letter Honoring St. Alphonsus with the title of
Doctor of the Church]

as well as considerations on the fourth commandment in regard to
obedience, the fifth in terms of murder, just war and abortion, and
in the 6th, adultery and the various sins against chastity.

written. Expounding on the theme, \What doth it profit a man if he

... Alphonse de Liguori Puccinelli, 1829
Who Was Canonized In The Year 1839 With Remarks Thereon By The
Minister Of Christ Church, Claughton, Birkenhead.
Saint Alphonsus Liguori, founder of the Redemptorists, provides
programs of prayers and meditations for thirty-one visits to the
Blessed Sacrament. Each day he offers devotional and inspirational
material for eucharistic adoration, spiritual communion, and
prayer. At the end of each visit Alphonsus gives material for a
visit to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The saint also includes two
hymns. His book draws widely from the writings of the saints.
Alphonsus relinquished a career as a lawyer in order to respond to
his vocation to study for the priesthood. In Naples he worked
especially with the poor, and he established evening chapels for
young people in the city. While serving as bishop he wrote many
books and articles. Alphonsus was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in
1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871.
This rich classic passed out of common usage years ago, but here we
find it restored for the first time to the benefit of the English
reader. St. Alphonsus transformed the landscape of the experience
of this Reconciliation, and our confessional experience would be
unthinkable without his saintly, intellectual, and pastoral
prowess. While the cultural and historical context is amazingly
fascinating, it necessitates peeling back those layers to see the
glimmering treasure within. For that reason, this edition provides
an introductory essay that steps lightly to take note of these
difference for a fruitful reception of the saint's genius. May all
readers benefit for the greater glory of God.
