Population ageing is projected to affect all countries across the
world in coming decades. The current rate of population ageing is
unprecedented in human history with population projections
indicating that this will be an enduring trend. Moreover,
population ageing is spatially pervasive, affecting every man,
woman and child. This has considerable implications for policy
responding to the economic, social and healthcare outcomes of
population ageing. The potential economic implications have been
likened to those of the 2008 global financial crisis. This book
examines the patterns and causes of uneven population ageing. It
identifies those countries and localities most likely to experience
population ageing and the reasons for this. Attention is also given
to the role that youth migration, labour force migration,
retirement migration and ageing in place have in influencing the
spatial concentrations of older people. The book brings together a
range of diverse international case studies to illustrate the
importance of understanding the causes of population ageing. Case
studies include a review of ageing in Florida's (USA) labour force,
an investigation into the housing arrangements for the elderly in
Northern Ireland and an assessment of the environmental stewardship
activities of Grey Nomads on Western Australia's remote north
coast.

Discover how a young girl gains healing and hope as she processes
the loss of a loved one in this beautifully sensitive story. Piper
is feeling sad and empty after the loss of her mother. So when her
father, who is struggling in his own way, gives her a telescope to
console her, she's excited to explore the night sky. But she
doesn't find stars or planets when she looks through her lens.
Instead, she finds a constellation of memories, a treasured
collection of big and small moments with her mother, which she
hurries to draw before they fade from view. Night after night she
sketches, until eventually, she finds herself in a room covered in
memories, surrounded by reminders of her mother's love. This
poignant book offers children a pathway to acknowledge and process
their grief over the loss of a loved one. The author's spare and
lyrical language provides the emotional depth the topic requires,
while allowing parents and caregivers to use the book to begin
deeper conversations with their young loved ones. Whether children
choose to use art as their outlet or find another way, the message
is clear: they can carry the memories of their loved ones with
them. An ending Note to Parents features guidance from a licensed
children's counselor about how to use the book and where to find
additional resources. Written from a place of personal experience,
this story strives to bring comfort to children hurting after loss.
Discover the inspiring story of the American flag that flew over
Ground Zero, traveled across all fifty states as it was repaired,
and returned to New York, a restored symbol of unity. In the days
following September 11th, a 30-foot American flag hung torn and
tattered at 90 West Street, across from Ground Zero. A few weeks
later, the flag was taken down by a construction crew and tucked
away in storage, where it stayed for nearly seven years. The flag
was brought out of storage in 2008 when the New York Says Thank You
Foundation headed to Greensburg, Kansas, a town nearly destroyed by
a tornado. NYSTY brought the flag with them, sparking a grassroots
restoration effort that traveled over 120,000 miles across all
fifty states, bringing together thousands of people, and helping
America heal and rebuild . . . hand by hand, thread by thread, one
stitch at a time. This book is the story of that journey, a journey
that ended at the opening of the National September 11 Museum,
where the flag remains today. Along the way, the flag was restored
using pieces of retired flags from every state--including a piece
of the flag that Abraham Lincoln was laid on after he was shot at
Ford's Theater and threads from the original Star-Spangled Banner
flag, which flew at Fort McHenry in the War of 1812 and inspired
Francis Scott Key to write the National Anthem. The pieces and
threads were stitched in by military veterans, first responders,
educators, students, community-service heroes, and family members
of 9/11 victims, among others. At each stop, communities came
together to remember, to heal, and to unite.
At fifteen, Faith Duckle was lured under the bleachers by a
bunch of boys and brutally attacked. Now, almost a year later, a
newly thin Faith is haunted by her past and by the flippant, cruel
ghost of her formerly fat self who is bent on revenge.
Faith eventually turns to violence for retribution, forcing her
to flee home in search of the only friend she has -- a troubled but
caring busboy who is the lover of a sideshow performer -- and to
tumble into the colorful, transient world of the circus. But as she
dives headfirst into a world of adult passions and dreams,
mercurial allegiances, and exhilarating self-discovery, Faith must
also face some disturbing truths about herself and the world around
her.
Enter into the worlds of fifteen young women who, despite their vastly different circumstances, seem to negotiate an eerily similar and unavoidably dangerous emotional terrain. With a visceral bite or a surreal edge, each electrically charged story in Circling the Drain presents women trying to understand the nature of loss--of leaving or being left--and discovering that in the throes of feverish conflict, things are rarely what they seem. By turns dark and lyrical, ferocious and playful, these stories are precise, startling, and undeniably original. Reading them is a cathartic, mesmerizing literary experience.

Following in the footsteps of the late great Lester Bangs -- the
most revered and irreverent of rock 'n' roll critics -- twenty-four
celebrated writers have penned stories inspired by great songs.
Just as Bangs cast new light on a Rod Stewart classic with his
story "Maggie May," about a wholly unexpected connection between an
impressionable young man and an aging, alcoholic hooker, the
diverse, electrifying stories here use songs as a springboard for a
form dubbed the lit riff.
Alongside Bangs's classic work, you'll find stories by J.T.
LeRoy, who puts a recovering teenage drug abuser in a dentist's
chair with nothing but the Foo Fighters's "Everlong" -- blaring
through the P.A. -- to fight the pain; Jonathan Lethem, whose
narrator looks back on his lost innocence just as an extramarital
affair careens to an end -- this to the tune "Speeding Motorcycle"
as recorded by Yo La Tengo; and Jennifer Belle, who envisions a
prequel to Paul Simon's "Graceland" -- one that takes place at a
children's birthday party replete with a real live kangaroo.
With original contributions from Tom Perrotta, Nelson George,
Amanda Davis, Lisa Tucker, Aimee Bender, Darin Strauss, and many
more -- riffing on everyone from Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen to
the White Stripes, Cat Power, and Bob Marley -- this is both an
astounding collection of short stories and an extraordinary
experiment in words and music.
