DRM, a Design Research Methodology (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Lucienne T.M. Blessing, Amaresh Chakrabarti DRM, a Design Research Methodology (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Lucienne T.M. Blessing, Amaresh Chakrabarti
R5,363 Discovery Miles 53 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The initial motivator for the development of DRM, a Design Research Methodology, and the subsequent writing of this book was our frustration about the lack of a common terminology, benchmarked research methods, and above all, a common research methodology in design. A shared view of the goals and framework for doing design research was missing. Design is a multidisciplinary activity occurring in multiple application areas and involving multiple stakeholders. As a consequence, design research emerges in a variety of disciplines for a variety of applications with a variety of subjects. This makes it particularly difficult to review its literature, relate various pieces of work, find common ground, and validate and share results that are so essential for sustained progress in a research community. Above all, design research needs to be successful not only in an academic sense, but also in a practical sense. How could we help the community develop knowledge that is both academically and practically worthwhile? Each of us had our individual ideas of how this situation could be improved. Lucienne Blessing, while finishing her thesis that involved studying and improving the design process, developed valuable insights about the importance and relationship of empirical studies in developing and evaluating these improvements. Amaresh Chakrabarti, while finishing his thesis on developing and evaluating computational tools for improving products, had developed valuable insights about integrating and improving the processes of building and evaluating tools.

Amaresh Chakrabarti, Udo Lindemann
R6,104 R4,972 Discovery Miles 49 720 Save R1,132 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Showcasing exemplars of how various aspects of design research were successfully transitioned into and influenced, design practice, this book features chapters written by eminent international researchers and practitioners from industry on the Impact of Design Research on Industrial Practice. Chapters written by internationally acclaimed researchers of design analyse the findings (guidelines, methods and tools), technologies/products and educational approaches that have been transferred as tools, technologies and people to transform industrial practice of engineering design, whilst the chapters that are written by industrial practitioners describe their experience of how various tools, technologies and training impacted design practice. The main benefit of this book, for educators, researchers and practitioners in (engineering) design, will be access to a comprehensive coverage of case studies of successful transfer of outcomes of design research into practice; as well as guidelines and platforms for successful transfer of research into practice.

Engineering Design Synthesis - Understanding, Approaches and Tools (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Amaresh Chakrabarti Engineering Design Synthesis - Understanding, Approaches and Tools (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Amaresh Chakrabarti
R6,028 Discovery Miles 60 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book brings together some of the most influential pieces of research undertaken around the world in design synthesis. It is the first comprehensive work of this kind and covers all three aspects of research in design synthesis:- understanding what constitutes and influences synthesis;- the major approaches to synthesis;- the diverse range of tools that are created to support this crucial design task.The chapters are comprised of cutting edge research and established methods, written by the originators of this growing field of research. They cover all major generic synthesis approaches i.e., composition, retrieval, change and repair, and tackle problems that come from a wide variety of domains within architecture and engineering as well as areas of application including clocks, sensors and medical devices. The book contains an editorial introduction to the chapters and the broader context of research they represent. With its range of tools and methods covered, it is an ideal introduction to design synthesis for those intending to research in this area as well as being a valuable source of ideas for educators and practitioners of engineering design.

An Anthology of Theories and Models of Design - Philosophy, Approaches and Empirical Explorations (Hardcover, 2014 ed.):... An Anthology of Theories and Models of Design - Philosophy, Approaches and Empirical Explorations (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Amaresh Chakrabarti, Lucienne T.M. Blessing
R4,935 Discovery Miles 49 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While investigations into both theories and models has remained a major strand of engineering design research, current literature sorely lacks a reference book that provides a comprehensive and up-to-date anthology of theories and models, and their philosophical and empirical underpinnings; "An Anthology of Theories and Models of Design "fills this gap.

The text collects the expert views of an international authorship, covering:

. significant theories in engineering design, including CK theory, domain theory, and the theory of technical systems;

. current models of design, from a function behavior structure model to an integrated model;

. important empirical research findings from studies into design; and

. philosophical underpinnings of design itself.

For educators and researchers in engineering design, "An Anthology of Theories and Models of Design "gives access to in-depth coverage of theoretical and empirical developments in this area; for practitioners, the book will provide exposure to theoretical and empirical foundations to methods and tools that are currently practiced as well as those in the process of development."
