Sixty years ago, the United Nations took a moral stand against
human rights crimes and adopted the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, a proclamation of thirty rights that belong to us all,
starting memorably with Article 1: "All human beings are born free
and equal."
Now, an array of internationally acclaimed writers have chosen one
of the thirty rights as the inspiration for a short story.
Published in association with Amnesty International, the result is
a mix of thoughtful, serious, funny, and thrilling stories that
harness the power of literature to celebrate--and affirm--our
shared humanity.
The Justitia Omnibus is the journal of the the Amnesty
International society at the London School of Economics and
Political Science. Written, designed and edited by students, the
journal has become an annual endeavour for the society. The journal
aims to provide a platform for students to express their views on
human rights issues all over the world as well as to highlight the
work our society undertakes to support Amnesty International on
campus, such as campaigning and fundraising events.
The LSESU Amnesty International Society aims to further the work of
Amnesty International UK on a campus level. We run campaigns to
raise awareness of key human rights issues and host events to raise
money which goes towards helping AIUK further its vital work.
Highlights of this year include a panel discussion on the human
rights concerns evident in the Syrian conflict and our campaign
week to highlight the need for an International Arms Trade Treaty.
Bringing together 31 world-renowned artists, We Are All Born Free
is a fully illustrated, simplified adaptation of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, established to cultivate world peace
in the wake of the Second World War. Published in association with
Amnesty International to mark the 60th anniversary of the
declaration, the collection leads readers through each of its 30
articles, the full resonance of which is beautifully realised by
the accompanying illustrations. Children and adults will recognise
the work of their favourite artists and discover new ones as they
gain valuable and long-lasting insight into the rights that 'belong
to everyone, whatever our differences.' With the unique styles of
Axel Scheffler, Peter Sis, Satoshi Kitamura, Alan Lee, Polly
Dunbar, Jackie Morris, Debi Gliori, Chris Riddell and many more,
the role of the declaration in shaping the modern world has never
been more boldly presented. Simplified text helps younger readers
develop an understanding of this momentous document. Rich and
varied illustrations by 31 internationally recognised artists,
including children's illustrators, painters and political
activists. Includes a helpful index at the back to match artists
with articles. All royalties from the sale of this book are donated
to Amnesty International. Actor David Tennant and John Boyne,
author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, provide forewords
explaining how the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is more
than an era-defining document: it is a collection of 'rules for the
world to live by', and We Are All Born Free 'might be the most
important [book] that you ever own.'
The monitoring and documenting of human rights abuses is a
relatively recent area of work; the nature and implications of
human rights law are in flux; and there is greater consideration
for human-rights dimensions in armed conflicts. The human rights
agencies are consequently repositioning themselves, redefining
their roles and adapting their practices. This study provides an
overview of the sorts of abuses - political killings, torture,
excessive use of force, death in custody, sexual violence -
occurring in armed conflicts and makes suggstions about how to
investigate and verify information for each violation. It includes
extracts from international and regional human rights law and
international humanitarian law, intended as a working basis for
organisations investigating, documenting and acting upon abuses.

Violence has become a part of daily life in Israel and the Occupied
Territories since the latest intifada began on 29 September 2000.
More than 570 Palestinians, including 150 children, have been
killed by Israeli security forces. More than 150 Israelis,
including 30 children, have been killed by Palestinian groups and
individuals. Israeli forces have killed Palestinians unlawfully by
shooting them during demonstrations and at checkpoints although
lives were not in danger. They have shelled residential areas and
committed extrajudcial executions. Palestinian armed groups and
individuals have deliberately killed Israeli civilians by placing
bombs in crowded places and in drive-by shootings.Amnesty
International has repeatedly called on Israeli authorities to abide
by international human rights standards and urged the Palestinian
Authority and armed groups to act in accordance with humanitarian
law. It has also called on the international community to take
action necessary to ensure respect for human rights in the region.
Far from being a mediaeval practice eradicated in modern times,
torture continues to thrive the world over, mostly in places where
people are deprived of their liberty, but also elsewhere. Nowhere
are people totally free from the risk of torture and other
ill-treatment, whether directly by officials or through official
complicity, inaction or failure. This manual outlines the
safeguards that exist in international law to protect people
against torture, and gives examples of successful campaigning
techniques to put an end to torture. It covers the human rights
standards that apply at every stage from arrest and detention to
trial and imprisonment. It outlines the key steps that governments
and campaigners can take to end torture and other ill treatment and
gives ideas for activism based on Amnesty's own tried and tested
methods.Main Points* A vital one-stop resource for information on
