The art of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is synonymous with the
female nude, with the term ‘Rubenesque’ first coined in the
19th century to describe a voluptuous female body. Yet remarkably,
there has never been a focused study of Rubens’ depictions of
women, making this book, and the exhibition that it will accompany,
a first. Bringing together a diverse range of paintings and
drawings from throughout the artist’s career and from a range of
international lenders, the exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery
(October 2023 – January 2024) will challenge the popular
assumption that Rubens only painted one type of woman. Instead, it
will present a more nuanced view of the varied and essential role
that women played in the artist’s life and work, uniting and
contributing to recent scholarly developments in subjects such as
the identities of Rubens’ sitters, 17th century artistic theory
and practice, and Rubens’ treatment of the human body.Â
Rubens evidently enjoyed painting the female figure, especially in
its sensual and unclothed form. But his women are never mere bodies
trapped by the male gaze, on the contrary; they are proud and
complex heroines, full of character and gravitas. No other male
artist has created such potent images of female power, assurance,
determination, commitment, and beauty. Providing a catalogue for
the works in the exhibition and featuring three introductory essays
that contextualise Rubens’ work, this publication will both
contribute to the existing corpus of scholarly literature on Rubens
and introduce his masterpieces to new audiences, discussing them in
the context of current debates around sexuality, power and
feminism.Â

Children have always fascinated artists and Painting Childhood will
explore some of the most iconic paintings of children produced over
the past 500 years. Featuring stunning portraits, amusing genre
scenes and touching 'fancy pictures', the book will examine both
the creative process and the specifi c challenges posed by painting
children: from how to capture the fleeting moments of youth to how
to encourage young subjects to sit still. Accompanying the
exhibitions Painting Childhood: From Holbein to Freud and Childhood
Now, the book will discuss a wealth of masterpieces from British
collections by artists including Hans Holbein the Younger, Anthony
van Dyck, Jan Steen, Bartolome Esteban Murillo, William Hogarth,
Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, Johan Zoff any and John
Everett Millais. These iconic paintings will be considered
alongside the preparatory sketches that were made for them and the
works that were made after them in an exploration of the creative
process and the artistic 'conversations' that occurred throughout
the centuries. Painting Childhood will also explore 'intimate
portraits' - artist's portrayals of their own children. Paintings,
sketches and sculptures by Stanley Spencer, Louise Bourgeois, Jacob
Epstein and Lucian Freud, among others, present highly personal
insights into the place of family within an artist's life, and the
ongoing dialogue between biography and creativity. This theme
extends to the present day, and the work of three contemporary
figurative painters - Chantal Joffe, Mark Fairnington and Matthew
Krishanu. Drawn to children as subjects, each of these London-based
artists depict childhood in very diff erent ways. Together, they
provide fresh perspectives on what constitutes childhood today and
reaffirm the place of painting as a diverse and powerful artistic
practice.
This accompanying publication will explore the development and
diversity of this legendary dynasty of Flemish painters over four
generations and 150 years. From the proverb pictures and peasant
festivals of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his eldest son Pieter
Brueghel the Younger to the exquisite flower pieces of Jan 'Velvet'
Brueghel and the captivating cabinet paintings of Jan van Kessel,
the book will unravel the mysteries of the dynasty, and will
explore how Bruegel's sons were able to emulate their father's
model despite having no access to his paintings. The book will turn
the spotlight on to the major Bruegel holdings in UK collections
for the first time, telling the story of the dynasty through
masterpieces from British public collections and a number of
previously unseen works from private collections.
