Thermo-Mechanical Processing of Metallic Materials, Volume 11 (Hardcover): Bert Verlinden, Julian Driver, Indradev Samajdar,... Thermo-Mechanical Processing of Metallic Materials, Volume 11 (Hardcover)
Bert Verlinden, Julian Driver, Indradev Samajdar, Roger D. Doherty
R4,677 Discovery Miles 46 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Modern metallic materials are used extensively in a wide variety of applications, some of which are quite obvious (vehicles, cables, buildings and packaging) and others perhaps less so as in the critical structures of planes, skyscrapers, micro-electronic devises, nuclear and other energy plants. Many of the alloys used for these applications have undergone major transformations over the last 20 years. These transformations have been implemented to improve the material performances at minimum cost to the user. In many cases, if not most, they have resulted from advances in Thermo-Mechanical Processing - the set of operations by which basic materials are transformed into high quality components.
Divided into three sections, the first section covers the microstructural science base of the subject, including the microstructure determined mechanical properties of metals. The second section deals with the current mechanical technology of plastic forming of metals. The concluding section illustrates the interaction of the first two disciplines in a series of case studies of successful current TMP processing and also looks ahead to possible new developments in the field.
This book aims to fill this gap between two scientific approaches and illustrate also their successful linkage by the use of suitable modern case studies.
* Covers both physical metallurgy and metals processing
* Links basic science to real everyday applications
* Written by four internationally-known experts in the field

This book offers a comprehensive yet concise take on the legal regulation of the various phases in the complex cycle of armed conflicts, from prevention to reconstruction, and covering everything in between, in particular the vast body of rules laid down in current international humanitarian law. The manual combines a general theoretical approach with modern practice in order to offer a complete picture of the law before, during and after warfareThrough a series of fourteen thematic chapters that logically follow from one to another, scholars and practitioners tackle core issues relating to the international regulation of armed conflicts, while situating them in a broader societal context. Particular attention is given to the emergence of the European Union as an increasingly important regional and global player in international peace and security. In combination with the broad scope and accessible nature of the collection, the experience and ambition on display in this volume makes it a unique reference tool for students, scholars, practitioners, civil servants, diplomats and humanitarian and human rights workers around the globe. It is complemented by, and a helpful companion to, J. Wouters and P. De Man, Humanitarian and Security Law: A Compendium of International and European Instruments.

Diving for Treasure - Discovering history in the depths (Paperback): Vic Verlinden, Stefan Panis Diving for Treasure - Discovering history in the depths (Paperback)
Vic Verlinden, Stefan Panis
R567 R524 Discovery Miles 5 240 Save R43 (8%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book recounts the efforts over many years to dive wrecks that contained treasure in one form or another. The often prolonged and sometimes dangerous expeditions tell of dives to many ships that were wrecked while carrying tons of gold or other valuables. Many of the wrecks came to lie at great depths which demanded considerable diving expertise using rebreathers which allowed longer dives to be performed. The authors are both diving experts and in addition to the accounts and historical pictures they have added their own photography to convey to the reader the challenges of the dives undertaken. The technical demands were considerable, from adjusting the camera housing to accommodate the depth to diving at particular times of the year because many of the wrecks were situated in areas of high seas and extreme currents. Many of these wrecks have been the subject of concerted efforts from salvage teams but success could never be assumed. It took several years to visit and photograph the wrecks mentioned in the book which provides a fascinating account of the vessels and their treasure, and the challenges of diving in what can be a dangerous environment. Each entry provides details and a brief history of the vessel and the means of its demise, enhanced by a modern diving account with photographs. As such the book will be of great interest to all divers whether active or armchair, and to anyone with an interest in maritime/military history.

The Van Gogh Sisters (Hardcover): Willem-Jan Verlinden The Van Gogh Sisters (Hardcover)
Willem-Jan Verlinden
R602 Discovery Miles 6 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The lively and revealing correspondence that Vincent van Gogh maintained with his art-dealer brother Theo is famous as a source of insight into the mind of one of the most celebrated artists of all time. But what of Anna, Lies and Willemien van Gogh, with whom Vincent had intimate and sometimes turbulent relationships? It was an argument with his oldest sister, Anna, in the aftermath of their father's death that provoked Vincent to leave the Netherlands and never return. The Van Gogh siblings grew up at a time when long-distance travel by train first became possible. As each went their own way, following work and study to London, Paris, Brussels and beyond, they maintained the close relationships forged in their youth in the Netherland's idyllic countryside by sending candid and personal letters. In this thoughtful and unprecedented biographical history, Willem-Jan Verlinden delves into previously unpublished correspondence in the Van Gogh family archives to bring Vincent's three sisters out from their brothers' shadow, poignantly portraying their dreams, disappointments and grief. The oldest sister, Anna, worked as a governess in England as a young woman before marrying a Dutch industrialist. The second sister, Lies, fell into poverty in spite of her literary aspirations and was forced to sell many of her brother's paintings. Willemien, the third sister, was an active participant in the first feminist wave. She visited the studio of Edgar Degas in Paris with Theo and discussed art enthusiastically with her painter brother. She and Vincent also shared their struggles with mental health, which for Willemien resulted in institutionalization for the second half of her life. With great clarity and empathy, The Van Gogh Sisters captures a moment of profound social, economic and artistic change. The sisters' intimate discussions of poetry and books, love, personal ambition and the opportunities afforded them broaden our understanding of this dramatic era in European history when the feminist movement was emergent and idealists of all stripes climbed the barricades in pursuit of revolution. With 132 illustrations, 21 in colour
