This book represents the first attempt to query the contribution of women as cultural agents to the colonization, the anti-colonial opposition and the decolonization of territories ruled by Portugal in the African continent between the turn of the twentieth century and the early twenty-first. In contrast to the longstanding scholarship on the subject as regards other European empires, the entanglement of gender and colonialism has been ignored in the Portuguese case. Hence, this book takes a long view, surveying mostly little known historical and literary records that evince how "women" and "colonialism" were discursively constructed at particular points in time in view of a colonialist project that became the reason for being of the fascist authoritarian regime (1933-1974). A cultural studies approach of radical contextualization informs each of the five main chapters, in which documents from a range of disciplines are brought to bear on the main problematic of the female-authored works in focus. The latter are all written in the metropole as a place of colonial return and critical reflection. Beyond recuperating women's voices, this book suggests a story of Portuguese colonialism in the African continent that is anything but Lusotropicalist.

A two-dimensional code is described, based on Saint Venant's Torsion Problem; to find the warping mode for any considered cross-section, including non- homogeneous material. Each warping mode is achieved for unitary rotation by unit of length. The computational code is tested regarding its capacity of reproducing analytical results for Saint-Venant torsion. Some results for laminated cross sections are also provided. This work is considered the warping for any cross-section, i.e., not limited to thin-walled cross sections. In addition it is considered laminated materials for any cross-section.

Published in 1972, New Portuguese Letters addressed censored issues - such as the colonial war, immigration, the Catholic Church, violence, and the legal and social status of women - becoming a symbol of resistance against the Fascist Portuguese regime. Privileging feminist approaches, this volume maps the reception of the book in Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, the UK, Ireland, the USA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Scandinavia. The scandal that surrounded the banning of New Portuguese Letters, under the accusation of 'pornographic content', and the trial of the three authors for 'outraging public morals', brought the case to the attention of the international community. The book found instant support from feminist movements and well-known writers - such as Simone de Beauvoir, Marguerite Duras, Doris Lessing, Iris Murdoch, Adrienne Rich and Anne Sexton - and was adopted as "the first international feminist cause". Given its great significance in political and aesthetic terms, New Portuguese Letters was - and remains - a fundamental work in contemporary literature and culture, offering an invaluable contribution to the history of women and raising crucial issues relevant for political agendas today, such as equality, justice and freedom.
