La Revolte des Anges (The revolt of the angels)(1914), often
considered France's most profound novel, tells the story of Arcade,
the guardian angel of Maurice d'Esparvieu, who falls in love, and
starts a revolt after becoming converted to free thought by
Lucretius' summery of Epicurean philosophy De rerum natura. The
work, a convincing protest against violence and tyranny, was the
author's last great novel.
