Focusing on two central themes--the psychobiological evolution from
youth to adult and the effects of drugs on the developing central
nervous system--this important reference elucidates the mechanisms
of chemical dependency in adolescents. Its multidisciplinary
coverage analyzes addiction across major domains of human
functioning against the backdrop of hormonal, cognitive, and other
changes that accompany the transition to adulthood. Chapters
discuss legal as well as illicit drugs, examine age-related social
contexts, and present the latest findings on links between drug use
and mental disorders. Throughout, the contributors make clear that
education is more valuable to understanding--and
preventing--substance abuse than are prohibition and zero-tolerance
thinking. Included among the topics: Cognitive development,
learning, and drug use. Neurobiology of the action of drugs of
abuse. Findings in adolescents with substance dependence based on
neuroimaging tests. Alcohol abuse in adolescents: relevance of
animal models. Effects of chronic drug abuse on the chronobiology
of sleep in adolescents. Neurological and cognitive disorders
arising from the chronic use of drugs of abuse. The multiple lenses
for understanding its subject and the sensitivity with which causal
nuances are treated make Neuroscience of Drug Abuse in Adolescence
an invaluable resource for clinical and child psychologists,
psychiatrists, social workers, and addiction counselors.
Emerging approaches to treating addictions and minimizing relapse
are spotlighted in this idea-packed volume, as alternatives or
adjuncts to standard psychological and pharmacological therapies.
Its biopsychosocial perspective delves into the causes and
processes of chemical dependence, and the clinical characteristics
it shares with other addictions (e.g., food, sex, gambling, online
activities), to identify client needs that substance abuse may
fulfill. Accordingly, the diverse modalities featured here address
substance addiction on multiple levels, offering clients physical
or mental stimulation and/or emotional relief as well as affording
different degrees of autonomy. Methods can be mixed and matched to
reinforce treatment goals, and clinicians can tailor treatment to
individual issues and interests to assure clients nuanced and
meaningful care. Included in the coverage: * Use of herbal medicine
to treat drug addiction. * EMDR therapy and the treatment of
substance abuse and addiction. * Evaluating the change processes in
drug users' interventions. * Web-based interventions for substance
abuse. * Physical exercise and treatment of addiction. *
Mindfulness to reduce the anxiety during the abstinence *
Neurofeedback to deal with craving and anxiety symptoms

larger health institutions and community services. It presents a
comprehensive overview of the different aspects involved with
substance use disorders from a psychological perspective, from
prevention to recovery. The volume offers an integrative view about
neurobiological, behavioral and psychosocial aspects related to
becoming a substance user; shows how psychological assessment tools
can be used to diagnose substance use disorders; describes how
different kinds of psychotherapy can be applied in the treatment of
substance use disorders; and presents a range of evidence-based
clinical and social interventions designed for both prevention and
treatment of substance use disorders. Apart from covering the whole
range of services related to the prevention, diagnosis and
treatment of substance use disorders, the volume also shows how
these issues can be approached from different theoretical
perspectives within psychology, such as: Behavioral and Cognitive
Psychology Neuropsychology Existential Psychology Phenomenology
Psychoanalysis Analytical Psychology Community and Social
Psychology Psychology of Substance Abuse: Psychotherapy, Clinical
Management and Social Intervention will be a useful resource for
psychologists and other health professionals working with substance
users, as well as to undergraduate and graduate students looking

This book frames a series of protests occurred in Brazil from 2013
to 2016 as exemplary cases of global trends in contentious politics
to analyze the tension between two forms of collective action: the
militant (militante) and the prefigurative activist (ativista).
Building on sociology, political science, and psychology, it
explores the relationship between protestors' activities and
conceptions of political participation with their subjectivity and
agency. The protest cycle triggered by the June 2013 events in
Brazil gave strength and popularity to repertoires and strategies
of collective action uncommon and innovative. Those praxes defied
political parties' conventions, highlighted the limitations of
militant unionist tradition, and brought prefigurative activism to
the Brazilian left-wing agenda. In this book, Andre Luis Leite de
Figueiredo Sales combines theoretical tools and traditions from
South and North America to build an interdisciplinary approach to
Political Psychology and answer the question: what psycho-political
differences lie behind the disparate forms of political action
adopted by militantes (militants) and ativistas (prefigurative
activists) in Brazil? Inspired by books of short stories, the
chapters discuss different aspects of the distinction between
militancy and prefigurative activism. On them, the author deals
with problems such as: how are the ongoing changes in Brazilian
protest culture connected with the rising popularity of autonomist
movements across the globe? What differences does it make rooting
protest strategies in principles like resistance or refusal? How
does the culture informing militants and prefigurative activists'
conduct affect their political goals and horizons? How does
militant and prefigurative activist culture relate to militants and
prefigurative activists' forms of political consciousness? A
Political Psychology Approach to Militancy and Prefigurative
Activism: The Case of Brazil will be a valuable tool for social
movement researchers from different disciplines interested in
understanding how can subjectivity be, at the same time, a
determiner of activities performed in collective action, and
determined by these same transformative deeds.
This book presents the main concepts and tools for the adoption of
a biopsychosocial approach to psychotropic substances use and abuse
management, prevention and treatment. It aims to provide resources
for the design and implementation of health strategies and public
policies to deal with psychotropic substances use in a way that
fully recognizes the complex articulations between its biological,
psychological and social aspects, taking these three dimensions
into account to develop both health and social care policies and
strategies aimed at psychotropic substance users. The book is
organized in five parts. Part one presents a historical overview of
psychotropic substances use throughout human history and introduces
key concepts to understand the phenomenon from a biopsychosocial
perspective. The next three parts approach psychotropic substances
use from one of the interrelated dimensions of the biopsychosocial
perspective: part two focuses on the neurobiological aspects; part
three, on the psychological aspects; and part four, on the social
aspects and its implications for public policy design. Finally, a
fifth part is dedicated to special topics related to psychotropic
substances use. Drugs and Human Behavior: Biopsychosocial Aspects
of Psychotropic Substances Use is a guide to public agents, health
professionals and social workers interested in adopting the
biopsychosocial perspective to develop and implement both health
and social care strategies and policies based on an
interdisciplinary approach and aimed at dealing with psychotropic
substance users in a more humanized way.

Filling the gap between theoretical literature and the routine
activities of geophysicists in the oil industry, The Seismic Signal
and Its Meaning is a translation of the second edition of Analise
do Sinal Sismico, published in Portuguese by Sociedade Brasileira
de Geofisica (SBGf). For those performing acquisition, processing,
and/or interpretation, this book will aid an understanding of how
practical problems may have important links to seismic data
analysis theory. With an emphasis on providing an objective
description of the physical and mathematical aspects that support
these links, the rules necessary for robust reservoir
characterization are presented. With an extensive development of
Gassmann's (and Biot) theory and its relevance, the book
concentrates on phase and amplitude distortions to the seismic
signal, the physical processes that it undergoes, and the
interpretation methods to recover rock physics properties.
Capturing 30 years of teaching and improvement as a part of
Petrobras internal courses, the book is a modern treatment,
reflecting the many advances that have occurred in geophysics. The
book serves as both a text and a reference.
Betrayed by her own sister, Branca Dias is thrown in jail for
heresy and forced to endure a grueling trial in Lisbon 1540s. She
challenges the power of the Catholic Church and flees to Brazil
with her twelve children in 1545.
Overview: In this book, Andre Luiz analyzes the various aspects of
mediumship, emphasizing the efforts of mediums faithful to the
spiritual mandate received prior to their reincarnation. He also
warns of the risks involved in the poor interchange between the two
worlds. It talks about trance, somnambulism, possession,
clairvoyance, the out-of-body experience, fascination, psychometry
and the mediumship of physical effect, among others. It is a
technical study of great relevance, which discloses the ways in
which Spirits act during intricate processes of communication with
the incarnates. It relays concepts of spirituality, received from
enlightened mentors, contained in explanations of philosophical,
scientific and evangelical nature, indispensable to those who
dedicate to the study of mediumship.
