SEVERAL reasons have led me to apply myself to the study of
Chateaubriand's life. The first was a great admiration for the
writer, one of those who have exercised the most lasting and
profound in fluence on French literature; the second the desire to
compare a French romantic with the English romantics I had studied,
and especially to find in Chateaubriand the original of which Byron
was so often a copy; the third a keen interest in that strange
exist ence which found itself bound up with the whole history of
France throughout the most dramatic period of that history* The Old
Order, the Revolution, the Empire, the Restoration, the July
monarchy, Chateaubriand knew them all; he was banished by the
Republic, a rival of the Emperor, a minister and afterwards an op
ponent of the King; he lived in England and in America. In his time
he was traveller, soldier, novelist, ambassador, religious writer
and political publicist; he was loved by the most beautiful and
sphinx-like woman of herage. In all this there is so much material
for a biography that it is suiprising to find that Chateaubriand's
has all things considered, been rarely written.

Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) was a literary spellbinder whose gripping tales of magic, mystery and murder are shot through with deep philosophical paradoxes. This collection brings together many of his stories, including the celebrated 'Library of Babel', 'Garden of Forking Paths', 'Funes the Memorious' and 'Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote'. In later life, dogged by increasing blindness, Borges used essays and brief tantalizing parables to explore the enigmas of time, identity and imagination. Playful and disturbing, scholarly and seductive, his is a haunting and utterly distinctive voice.
First published in 1927, this book presents an extract from Mape, a
work by Andre Maurois (1885-1967). The text is presented in the
original French with a special preface written by the author and
detailed notes. This book will be of value to anyone with an
interest in French literature and the works of Maurois.
First published in 1931, this book presents a series of extracts
from the writings of Andre Maurois (1885-1967). The text is
presented in the original French with a special preface by the
author and detailed notes. This book will be of value to anyone
with an interest in French literature and the works of Maurois.
First published in 1926, this book presents an extract from the
writings of Andre Maurois (1885-1967). The text is presented in the
original French with a special preface by the author and detailed
notes. A vocabulary of military terms is also included. This book
will be of value to anyone with an interest in French literature
and the works of Maurois.
Originally published in 1929, this book contains an analysis of
biography writing based on six lectures delivered at Trinity
College, Cambridge, in May 1928. Maurois does not go into the
history of biography writing, but focuses instead on biography as a
means of expression and art as well as science. This book will be
of value to anyone with an interest in biography writing or in
non-fiction writing more generally.
Originally published in 1926, as the second edition of a 1920
original, this highly popular novel narrates the experiences of a
British colonel in France during World War I. Maurois draws on his
experience as a translator and liaison officer to the British army
from 1915 to 1916 to create this study of humanity in wartime. By
turns sad and whimsical, and published in the original French, this
book will be of value to anyone interested in Allied experiences in
the First World War or in wartime fiction.

The groundbreaking trans-genre work of Argentinian writer Jorge
Luis Borges (1899-1986) has been insinuating itself into the
structure, stance, and very breath of world literature for well
over half a century. Multi-layered, self-referential, elusive, and
allusive writing is now frequently labeled Borgesian. Umberto Eco's
international bestseller, The Name of the Rose, is, on one level,
an elaborate improvisation on Borges' fiction "The Library," which
American readers first encountered in the original 1962 New
Directions publication of Labyrinths. This new edition of
Labyrinths, the classic representative selection of Borges' writing
edited by Donald A. Yates and James E. Irby (in translations by
themselves and others), includes the text of the original edition
(as augmented in 1964) as well as Irby's biographical and critical
essay, a poignant tribute by Andre Maurois, and a chronology of the
author's life. Borges enthusiast William Gibson has contributed a
new introduction bringing Borges' influence and importance into the
twenty-first century."
A new translation by Sergio E. Serrano of this inspirational book
containing sound advice on the art of living by the late historian,
biographer, and philosopher, Andre Maurois. ?Our lives are works of
art, expressions of inner beauty, conceived and created by our
inner selves, tested by the circumstances and experiences of life,
perfected and modified by the learning and growth resulting from
these experiences. Few authors have expressed these timeless
principles with more eloquence than Andre Maurois (1885-1967), one
of the most celebrated and prolific French writers of the 20th
century. An Art of Living was first published in France in 1939. It
is divided into five sections: The Art of Thinking, The Art of
Loving, The Art of Working, The Art of Leadership, and The Art of
Growing Old. Each section contains very profound, timeless, wisdom
about the most important aspects we face in life. Maurois was an
erudite, an acclaimed scholar, a historian, and a deep observer of
human nature and psyche. The real value of An Art of Living, is
that the sentences are not merely a collection of words to convey a
practical thought, but a communication to the spirit of the reader.
Maurois speaks to the soul of the reader. The principles he conveys
remain as valid and as useful in the 21st century as they were in
the 20th. There is so much insight in this book Maurois accurately
predicts the ultimate failure of all social revolutions; the
necessity of slow change in human customs and attitudes as a key to
lasting changes; the technological development and implementation
of robots in large assembly lines; the characteristics of a
reasonable and effective government; the inner virtues to cultivate
in order to successfully overcome the adversities of life; the
qualities to seek in order to maintain stable, loving,
relationships; the attributes to encourage as an effective manager;
the essentials by which to plan a long and enjoyable retirement;
and the principles behind an effective educational system. The book
speaks to young and old alike. An Art of Living remained out of
print for several decades. This new translation intends to
resurrect this little treasure of a book for the English readers of
today; it remains faithful to the original French edition and to
the style of the author.
