The Book of Ruth cannot be understood simply in terms of an emancipatory impetus or a history of integration. Its substantive and structural form is shaped by literary references and poetic allusions that interpret earlier narratives and lend it theological poignancy. As a history of hope in the gestalt of a family story, the Book of Ruth is a variant of wisdom theology in which human and divine actions are inseparably bound together.

The individual view of the artists on themselves and on their surroundings in the course of time is expressed. In the catalog, renowned authors explore the individual artists and their fascinating ways of reflecting on themselves and on others. The featured artists are Mary Cassatt, Marlene Dumas, Frida Kahlo, Lotte Laserstein, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Berthe Morisot, Alice Neel, Elizabeth Peyton, and Cindy Sherman.

Seinen Ruhm begrundeten aber auch die aus eigener Bautatigkeit und aus UEberlegungen zu architektonischen Grundsatzfragen entstandenen "Vier Bucher zur Architektur". Im ersten Buch bespricht Palladio alle Grundelemente, die bei der Errichtung eines Gebaudes zu beachten sind. Das zweite Buch ist dem privaten Wohnungsbau in Stadt und Land gewidmet. Die oeffentlichen Profanbauten und die Stadtbaukunst sind Themen des dritten Buches. Das vierte und umfangreichste Buch schliesslich befasst sich mit dem antiken Sakralbau.

However, this nonverbal quality allows works of art to become a challenge for art history, which is bound to language and writing. The expression "silent poetry" used for painting or architecture is an eloquent indicator for the communicative effect of forms of expression, which are measured by language, but whose silent gestures nevertheless have to be judged using their own categories. The topos of the underlying non-describability of art refers to aspects like aura and atmosphere, opening the wide field of pictorial rhetoric, and leading up to the museum practices used to hang paintings.

Works of art and buildings inherently imply movement. Not only is the action represented in an image or the dynamic unfolding of a motif of movement in architecture implied, but also the behavior of the viewer before a work of art. The present volume devotes itself to various facets of movement in the fine arts, as well as to its emotional impact - in paintings and photographs, but it also crosses over to the genres of film and performance, which include a temporal dimension. In these interdisciplinary essays, dealing with diverse media and epochs, the phenomenon of movement is requestioned using current theoretical approaches.

Artistic production is always associated with repetition, whether in imitation of nature or in imitation of art itself. The spectrum of the phenomenon "repetition" in the visual arts varies from the (im-)possibility of reproducing of a work to its direct thematization, for instance in printed reproductions, or as prolific repetitions in terms of varying, appropriating, adapting or converting. The essays in this volume examine repetitions that are characterized by evocations of memory, changes in form, reproduction methods and avant-garde breaks with repetitive aesthetics.
