This story begins with shoes. Rosa Parks took a stand by keeping her seat on the bus. When she was arrested for it, her supporters protested by refusing to ride. Soon a community of thousands was coming together to help one another get where they needed to go. Some started taxis, some rode bikes, but they all walked and walked. With dogged feet. With dog-tired feet. With boycott feet. With boycott blues. And, after 382 days of walking, they walked Jim Crow right out of town. . . . Andrea Davis Pinkney and Brian Pinkney present a poignant, blues-infused tribute to the men and women of the Montgomery bus boycott, who refused to give up until they got justice.

After the significant & life changing event of losing his wife, Pastor Jim Davies allows us the unique privilege of exposing his innermost thoughts & spiritual encounters that led him through those unfathomably painful days to a thoroughly new experience and understanding of the God who is Love.
On Friday January 13th 2012, the cruise ship, Costa Concordia, ran aground spilling 3200 passengers and 1,000 crew members into the dark water of the Mediterranean. Thirty two people died and many more suffered physical and emotional scars that are still healing. Andrea and Laurence Davis, South African natives and Canadian citizens were unable to find space in a life boat and leading the way, followed by others, had to swim for their lives as the 2000 foot-long ship was rolling over on top of them. Filled with raw emotion, the chaotic events of that night are told through Andrea's eyes from the over-turning dining room, to the open deck rife with panic and confusion, the decision to jump into the black waters and swim to a rocky shore, and the painful hike over coral rocks to safety. We witness the warm hospitality of the local Islanders who rescued, fed and clothed the survivors and the waiting world who prayed for news of their safety. The incredible decision to return to the scene of the disaster only six months later and thank the people of Giglio, despite the challenges of language and customs, attest to the open-hearted courage of the Davis couple.
Each of us has a "silent thunder" -- a quiet desire that rumbles from deep-down. For eleven-year-old Summer and her older brother Rosco, their secret dreams seem far out of reach. Both are slaves on a Virginia plantation in the year 1862. More than anything, Summer wants to learn to read and write. Rosco is eager to join the Union Army so that he can fight for the cause that would allow all people to be free. Told in alternating voices, this is a work of historical fiction by bestselling and award-winning author Andrea Davis Pinkney.
This book can be viewed as a study of prayer and The Names of God, as well as, used as a devotional guide into a more intimate relationship with Our Creator and Lord. It is a book to be experienced, not just read. You will begin by seeing how Genesis 22 is actually a guideline to HOW and WHEN to LISTEN for His Voice. Continuing with the theme of relationship with Him, we look into many of the passages that state "Lord" or "God," while the original Names called out "Creator," "Master," "Provider," and so much more. Each section ends with a prayer, thus leading you into reflections and thoughts of your own concerning what you have just read. Andrea Davis has a Master's Degree in Education and currently teaches at an alternative high school in Illinois. Nancy Radtke, who resides in Arizona and Illinois, has a degree in Occupational Therapy and is now a professional artist. Both authors are co-founders of In His Presence Prayer Ministries. IHPPM is a teaching ministry that seeks to help believers experience a deeper desire for The Presence of Their Heavenly Father, as well as, a more intimate relationship with Him. |
