Thinking with the South - Reframing Research Collaboration amid Decolonial Imperatives and Challenges: Andrea Fleschenberg, Kai... Thinking with the South - Reframing Research Collaboration amid Decolonial Imperatives and Challenges
Andrea Fleschenberg, Kai Kresse, Rosa Cordillera Castillo
R2,109 Discovery Miles 21 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume brings together a series of discussions by scholars from a range of disciplinary, (trans)regional and epistemic perspectives that came out of the Berlin-based "co2libri" networking initiative, with longstanding collaborative partners based in the global South. "Co2libri" stands for "conceptual collaboration: living borderless research interaction". As an interdisciplinary and transregional oriented initiative, co2libri envisages a multicentric perspective that integrates neglected positions of Southern theory and praxis into the heart of academic conversations. Co2libri’s collaborative endeavor builds on long-standing active connections with partners in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Instead of setting an agenda from the North, it proposes to figure out ways forward through collaborative engagement, building on relationships of mutual trust. Using formats that facilitate substantial and open-ended discussion, we are re-thinking theory and method, academic practices, and research ethics, while keeping material inequalities in view. Contributors to this edited volume are working toward the implementation of various innovative activities, research perspectives and collaboration formats which all subscribe to the principle of dialogue on equal footing with scholars and activists based in divergent positionalities along and beyond the Global North-South divide. In different ways, the authors work toward the goal of producing more adequate, and more sensitive, critical knowledge, and applying a fresh view to approach, methods, and ethical standards. Overall, the volume works, sometimes in exploratory ways, with alternative frames of reference while it presents diverse theorizations of lived experiences.

R3,835 Discovery Miles 38 350 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

'Local Responses to Global Challenges in Southeast Asia - A Transregional Studies Reader' is a collection of multidisciplinary essays, predominantly derived from papers presented at EuroSEAS 2019, the leading academic conference on Southeast Asian Studies, hosted by Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin. It brings together a variety of scholars from Southeast Asia, Europe and North America, allowing for multiple flows and directionalities of knowledge productions and exchanges, be it between the Global South and North as well as within the Global South. The reader presents empirically-oriented, theoretically grounded analyses of local responses to global challenges such as knowledge-productions; notions and practices of building diverse communities; neo-populisms and contentious politics; resources and sustainability; urbanization; labor, livelihoods and mobilities. Each section starts with an introduction reviewing the state of the art. Authors will take cue from a transregional perspective understood as a distinct and alternative perspective on multi-lingual and transcultural spaces of contact, exchange and transfer. This includes a contextualization of phenomena in terms of diverse (cross) linkages and entanglements, including motilities on different scales, i.e. ranging from the local, regional to national and/or global levels. Container-based notions of place and space are addressed in a critical manner, where space and area are understood as notions beyond established systems of ordering and meta-geographies. A key goal is to allow for a consistent conceptual advancement of New Area Studies, which are critical, decentred, decolonial, diversified, and multi-disciplinary in nature.

R911 Discovery Miles 9 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Women at the head of states and governments have become a regular phenomenon in South and Southeast Asia in the last decades, even though patriarchal structures have endured. This book discusses the relationship of the state and secularism, the significance of religion in society, the concept of the goddess, the perception and interpretation of martyrdom and sacrifice, and the question of moral capital as background for the emergence of women political leaders.

Dagmar Hellmann-Rajanayagam is researcher at the Ludwig- Maximilians-University Munich (Germany).

Andrea Fleschenberg is researcher at the University of Hildesheim (Germany).

Andrea Fleschenberg, Sarah Holz, Arslan Waheed
R1,860 Discovery Miles 18 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Pakistan at Seventy-Five investigates the countrys multi-layered issues in the context of a post-colonial polity marked by diversity, heterogeneity, stratification and volatility. This wide-ranging discourse engages with diverse formal and informal actors as markers of identity, historical events and social conditions, as well as global geo-political and neo-colonial centreperiphery relations that shape narratives about the nation and the constructions of a sense of belonging. The editors and contributors utilise multi-faceted and multi-layered approaches, focusing on (1) identities, and questions of diversity and pluralism; (2) horizontal and vertical technologies and geographies of power related to questions of trust, legitimacy, participation, and governance; and (3) the distribution, deprivation and vulnerability of sociocultural, political, and human resources. Studying Pakistan has been subject to different approaches, including decolonial, indigenous, and feminist perspectives. This volume draws out alternative epistemological and methodological viewpoints: the insideroutsider conundrum, centreperiphery asymmetries, hegemonic discourses, and practices within Pakistans national/international academy. The chapter contributions are the outcome of a unique interdisciplinary research cooperation at Quaid-i-Azam University, focussing on early career researchers. Presenting a multiplicity of voices and trajectories, Pakistan at Seventy-Five provides new input to existing debates and directions for future scholarly endeavour.

Women and Politics in Asia - A Springboard for Democracy? (Paperback): Andrea Fleschenberg, Claudia Derichs Women and Politics in Asia - A Springboard for Democracy? (Paperback)
Andrea Fleschenberg, Claudia Derichs
R757 Discovery Miles 7 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why study the nexus of gender, politics, and democracy in Asia? What kind of democracy and political participation can we conceptualize and identify for this heterogeneous region? In the increasingly visible Asian context, which concepts, contexts, discourses, and practices do we need to reflect upon most in order to understand the complex relationship between gender and democratic processes? The contributions in this book engage with precisely these crucial questions, and do so by drawing on a variety of case studies covering India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia. In the process, they scrutinize women's roles, strategies, practices, and discourses on political participation and gender-inclusive political reform in various arenas of political engagement. The book's essays range from studies of political actors and institutions, public policy and gender mainstreaming, political theory and citizenship discourses, to the study of various women's movements. The Gender Face of Asian Politics (Hardcover): Aazar Ayaz, Andrea Fleschenberg The Gender Face of Asian Politics (Hardcover)
Aazar Ayaz, Andrea Fleschenberg
R376 Discovery Miles 3 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Gender Face of Asian Politics covers a wide range of studies on gender and politics, gender and political leadership, impact and forms of female political representation and participation in different Asian countries such as Afghanistan, the Philippines, India, Burma/Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan. Beyond discussing the success and outcome of regional quota provisions and female public policy-making, international authors, coming from North America, Europe and Asia, investigate women's role and contributions as change agents, female heads of government or state, parliamentarians as well as opposition leaders at different tiers, from the local grassroots to the top echelons of political power.
All contributions originate from the third international conference on Women and Politics in Asia, held in Islamabad, Pakistan, in November 2005. They represent an ongoing study effort and transnational discussion among experts, academicians, women politicians and NGO representatives, leaving the reader with a systematic, in-depth and comparative knowledge of the various dynamics, characteristics and challenges of the gender face of Asian politics.
