Model Order Reduction, and 5. Uncertainty Quantification. Each part starts with a general introduction followed by the actual papers. This book discusses the development of the Rosenbrock-Wanner methods from the origins of the idea to current research with the stable and efficient numerical solution and differential-algebraic systems of equations, still in focus. The reader gets a comprehensive insight into the classical methods as well as into the development and properties of novel W-methods, two-step and exponential Rosenbrock methods. In addition, descriptive applications from the fields of water and hydrogen network simulation and visual computing are presented.

Vorwort Zukunftsmusik Es ist nicht lang her, daJ3 man sich freuen muJ3te, einen "groJ3en" Computer mit 640 K RAM sein Ei gen nennen zu diirfen. Im Laufe der Jahre jedoch hat sich das Erscheinungs- bild den PCs entscheidend gewandelt. "Schneller" und "mehr Speicher" heiJ3t heute die Devise. Daran scheinen sich nicht nur die Hardwarehersteller zu halten, sondem auch die Anbieter der verbreiteten Programmiersprachen, allen voran die Firma Borland. Der Bereich der Grafik und Animation unter Pascal auf einem PC bietet sich aus verschiede- nen Griinden an, bislang aber weniger unter Pascal als unter den "schnellen" Sprachen, wie C oder C++. Zu Beginn dieses Buchprojekte galt es, mit einer verbreiteten und beliebten Program- miersprache und einem kleinen AT gegen Computer anzutreten, die bereits vom Herstel- ler scheinbar nur fur die Animation entwickelt worden sind. Zur Verfugung standen der PC mit seiner sprichw?rtlich schwachen Grafikleistung und der als "Lehrsprache" im guten Namen beschnittene Programmiersprache Pascal in seiner neuesten Version 7.0.

Pandemie und Klimakrise rufen die herausragende Rolle der Wissenschaft und des wissenschaftlichen Wissens fur Informierung und Orientierung der Gesellschaft sowie fur die Beratung der Politik bei der Ausrichtung praktischer Massnahmen ins Bewusstsein. In diesem Zusammenhang wird die Frage virulent, weshalb der Wissenschaft diese herausgehobene Rolle zukommt. Dass diese Frage trotz der vielbeschworenen Autoritat der Wissenschaft alles andere als trivial ist, zeigt sich daran, dass Wissenschaftsskepsis und Relativierung wissenschaftlicher Resultate bis hin zur Wissenschaftsleugnung Einfluss gewinnen, sobald es um konkrete Fragen der Ausrichtung gesellschaftlichen Handelns an der Wissenschaft geht. Wodurch ist also Vertrauen in die durch die Wissenschaft ermittelten Fakten, die in ihren Modellen entworfenen Szenarien und ihre Ratschlage an Gesellschaft und Politik gerechtfertigt? Weshalb soll man der Wissenschaft in besonderem Masse vertrauen und auf ihren Ratschlag hoeren? Insgesamt sollen die Beitrage des Buches Aufschluss daruber geben, wodurch die Vertrauenswurdigkeit der Wissenschaft in ihrer modernen Form gerechtfertigt ist und an welche Bedingungen ihre besondere Rolle in der Gesellschaft geknupft ist. Was kann Wissenschaft fur die Gesellschaft leisten und wo liegen die Grenzen ihrer orientierenden Rolle? Was heisst es "auf die Wissenschaft zu hoeren" und was sind die Bedingungen dafur, dass Menschen in einer demokratischen Gesellschaft sich wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse aneignen und sie als Richtschnur fur ihr Handeln verwenden?
