The articles revolve around a central aspect of the common ground where linguistic theory and lexicographic practice meet and where certain tensions become apparent. One major emphasis is on the results of linguistic - and more especially lexicological - research and the way these can be turned to account in lexicography and applied fields. The other main concern is detailed analysis of types of lexicographic data collection, capture and presentation with a view to elaborating new standards for lexicography.
Proceeding on the basis of the collocation theory advanced by British functionalism, a language analysis model is developed for the lexical level which is usable in the context of computer-aided language processing. The working assumption is that traditional knowledge about language-external entities is not an absolutely necessary condition for the identification and characterization of language units. The analysis of formatives and their collocative behaviour in actual texts is assumed to be sufficient, particularly in connection with the frequency and statistical significance of their co-occurence. Maschine-aided language analysis procedures of the kind envisaged here embed language units derived from maschine-readable corpora into a lexical network, thus achieving a characterization of those units which is satisfactory enough to make it suitable for use in other language-processing tasks.
Controlling graphical user interfaces (GUI) by speech is slow, but proves useful for disabled persons with limitations in operating mouse and keyboard. This book presents a new approach, which promises to achieve shorter task completion times than prior art. The author first introduces speech-controlled GUI research by giving an overview of currently available technology. Then he analyzes the properties of different technological approaches for which he derives a common theoretical model. Motivated by the results, he then develops Conversation-and-Control, a new approach, which facilitates direct manipulation of graphical objects by spoken commands. The approach employs mixed-initiative dialogs based on heuristics for inferring the meaning of speech recognition results. The model also includes the ability for the system to ask clarification questions, thus, avoids the rejection of recognition errors where possible. The author describes the internal algorithms of Conversation-and-Control and discusses a user study which indicates a significant reduction of task completion time over prior art. The book is directed to researches and practitioners in speechcontrolled GUI research.
