Metafiction and the Postwar Novel is a full-length reassessment of
one of the definitive literary forms of the postwar period,
sometimes known as 'postmodern metafiction'. In the place of
large-scale theorizing, this book centres on the intimacies of
writing situations - metafiction as it responds to readers,
literary reception, and earlier works in a career. The emergence of
archival materials and posthumously published works helps to bring
into view the stakes of different moments of writing. It develops
new terms for discussing literary self-reflexivity, derived from a
reading of Don Quixote and its reception by J.L. Borges - the 'self
of writing' and the 'public author as signature'. Across three
comprehensive chapters, Metafiction and Postwar Fiction shows how
some of the most highly-regarded postwar writers were motivated to
incorporate reflexive elements into their writing - and to what
ends. The first chapter, on South African novelist J. M. Coetzee,
shows with a new clarity how his fictions drew from and relativized
academic literary theory and the conditions of writing in apartheid
South Africa. The second chapter, on New Zealand writer Janet
Frame, draws widely from her fictions, autobiographies, and
posthumously published materials. It demonstrates the terms in
which her writing addresses a readership seemingly convinced that
her work expressed the interior experience of 'madness'. The final
chapter, on American writer Philip Roth, shows how his early
reception led to his later, and often explosive, reconsiderations
of identity and literary value in postwar America.

Conventional wisdom has it that thinking on nature and grace among
Roman Catholic intellectuals between the sixteenth century and the
eve of Vatican II was severely clouded by the work of Cajetan and
his fellow Thomistic commentators. Henri de Lubac has rightly been
given credit for pointing this out; and to all appearances, de
Lubac's influence won the day, as can be seen by the imprint of his
thought upon not just the Second Vatican Council, but also the
pontifi cates of John Paul II and Benedict XVI. In recent years,
however, a new crop of Thomistic scholars has arisen who question
whether de Lubac's word on nature and grace should be the last;
hence, the debate over the nature-grace relation, so heated in the
mid-twentieth century, has been stirred once again. Andrew Dean
Swafford here offers a 'third way' by way of the nineteenth-century
German theologian, Matthias J. Scheeben, who has been neglected in
academic appraisals of the subject until now. Swafford shows that
Scheeben captures the very best of both sides, while at the same
time avoiding the characteristic pitfalls so often alleged against
each.
The Founding fathers left us with many unanswered questions, due to
their inability to sell us an airtight document. This is an
electrifying, terse, commentary and diverse calculation of critical
thinking by a difference of opinion regarding the structure and
intent of the Founders of the U.S. Constitution. The author
believes the Constitution has a percentage of which is "notional"
meaning roughly "not real" and aims at the heart of the voting
electorate - We the people. Its historical look back into the
mindset of the Founders is astounding in principle, yet provocative
in fact, when fast forwarded in real time to America's problems in
2012. Since, the Founders were never elected to represent us and
were self appointed slave masters who capitalized on the
quintessential innocence of the new nation, paid subordinate wages
and were allowed to continue with impunity. They have been adulated
by a society, that virtually has been screwed by them and held
hostage by their power and control. Many questions concerning the
responsibility, honesty, integrity, truthfulness and caring aspects
of the Founders are projected through character assassinations,
which lead to an upheaval in justice and truth which are the
hallmarks of democracy. Democracy is an illusion according to the
writer's critique. The questions remain - we are not or will we
ever be a British overseas territory? Will we succumb to what the
Argentine Falkland Islands have become through globalization -
British? The back end of our country is rising up and wants to know
what the frack is happening to all of their hard earned money and
who and what is controlling their government. The Power and Control
of the U.S. by British bankers and no transparency of the private
bank known as the umbrella Federal Reserve is expossed as a scam.
Our allegedly corrupt Congress is exposed for accepting lobbyist
money, that is really a kickback or bribe paid to continue King
William I of England's dream of holding onto the monarchy. We have
become a "suburb of London" and the Wall Street bankers have taken
a script right out of the Queen's playbook.
