What sets study abroad apart from tourism? Both study abroad and mass tourism are experiencing rapid growth in the international market-with study abroad increasingly serving as an integral component of the "university experience"-and both call on the same sorts of processes and infrastructures. Yet study abroad promoters often promise that student travel will not be a tourist experience but something deeper, more educational and engaging-an antidote to typical tourism. But as study abroad becomes both democratized and bureaucratized in the modern neoliberal university, what was once considered a cosmopolitan "anti-tourism" experience has progressively taken on the trappings of modern mass tourism: shorter, pre-programed, standardized and heavily-marketed. With contributions from anthropologists and cultural theorists who have deep ties to study abroad programs, Study Abroad and the Quest for an Anti-Tourism Experience examines the culture and cultural implications of student travel. Drawing on rich case studies from the Arctic to Africa, Asia to the Americas, this impressive array of experts focuses on challenges and ethical implications of student engagement, service and volunteering, immersion, student-faculty research collaborations in the field, local community impacts, and the impetus to craft a new generation of active, engaged global citizens. This volume is a must-read for students interested in study abroad, practitioners designing high-impact educational experiences away from their host institutions, and scholars who wish to explore the interrelationship between study abroad, tourism and anti-tourism movements.
"We fell in love with Jesus. Then we had to decide what to do with God." In Transcending Mysteries: Who Is God, and What Does He Want from Us? Andrew Greer and Ginny Owens take readers on a journey to answer the question: is the God of the Old Testament the same God we relate to and worship today? As the most definitive written revelation of who God is, Scripture has always been vital to the stories of the Christian faith. The Old Testament has proved especially tough for those who have been persuaded by the gracious gospel of Jesus but also desire to surrender to a God they don't fully comprehend. We adore the Son of God, but what about God the Father? Using Old Testament stories Andrew and Ginny help Christ-followers reconcile a New Testament Redeemer with an Old Testament God and understand what God really wants from His people. They dialog back and forth as they share their own stories of struggle and surrender. Their comments are separated by speaker identifiers that are used throughout. Features include: Old Testament stories that are completed in Jesus' messageDialog between Andrew Greer and Ginny OwensMusic lyrics from Andrew and Ginny that illustrate biblical truthsThought-provoking questions for reflection or study
Rich Mullins was a once-in-a-lifetime singer/songwriter whose impact on Christian music and the church is still felt today, even twenty years after his passing. His words and music softened and inspired the most hardened hearts to believe. His was a ragged and raw faith of a pilgrim, poet, and prophet. Now more than a dozen of today's singers, songwriters, producers, and authors gather to share never-before-heard stories and lessons that continue to influence their music and ministries today. These lessons, gleaned from Rich's own struggles and pursuits, are combined with lyrics from unreleased Rich Mullins songs that will inspire longtime Mullins fans, new Christian music followers, and spiritual seekers trying to understand the reckless love of God.
