Bringing together a diverse group of world-leading professionals
across post-production film sound and electroacoustic music, Art of
Sound explores the creative principles that underpin how sonic
practitioners act to compose, tell stories, make us feel and
communicate via sound. Revealing new understandings through
analysis of interdisciplinary exchanges and interviews, this book
investigates questions of aesthetics, perception, and
interpretation, unveiling opportunities for a greater appreciation
of the creativity and artistry in sound practice which underpins
both experimental electronic music and the worldâs leading film
and television productions. It argues that, in contrast to
traditional ideas which can imagine creativity to flow from
overarching creative visions, we can better understand and
appreciate the creative act as constantly unfolding process of
inspiration, material action and reflection, within which the
creative flows with the materials of the work negotiating rich
networks of potential. Such an approach enables us to better
celebrate the reality of the creative process, de-centering
technologies and universal rules from our frameworks, opening up
sonic practices to more diverse ideas and approaches. Art of Sound
provides insight into the latest developments and approaches to
sound and image practice for composers, filmmakers, directors,
scholars, producers, sound designers sound editors, sound mixers,
and students who are interested in understanding the creative
potential of sound.
Few ethical issues create as much controversy as invasive
experiments on animals. Some scientists claim they are essential
for combating major human disease, or detecting human toxins.
Others claim the contrary, backed by thousands of patients harmed
by pharmaceuticals developed using animal tests. Some claim all
experiments are conducted humanely, to high scientific standards.
Yet, a wealth of studies have recently revealed that laboratory
animals suffer significant stress, which may distort experimental
results.
-Where, then, does the truth lie?
-How useful are such experiments in advancing human healthcare?
-How much do animals suffer as a result?
-And do students really need to dissect or experiment on animals?
-What are the effects on their attitudes towards them? Bioethicist
and veterinarian Andrew Knight presents more than a decade of
ground-breaking scientific research, analysis and experience to
provide evidence-based answers to a key question: is animal
experimentation ethically justifiable?

- Provides a much-needed, comprehensive overview of the field of
animal welfare, which has been rapidly growing and evolving -
Reviews the core topics in this field, such as the scientific bases
for moral consideration of animals, developing conceptualisations
of animal welfare, the broad range of animal welfare issues, animal
ethics, animal advocacy campaigns, and animal law and policy -
Addresses emerging issues such as the impact of climate change,
animal exploitation, antimicrobial resistance and pandemics -
essential reading for students of animal welfare everywhere, and
for policy-makers, researchers and other professionals working in
the animal welfare sector
Thomas Andrew Knight (1759-1838) was a distinguished British
naturalist and botanist who is often regarded as the father of
nineteenth-century horticultural science. From 1811 to 1838 Knight
was the president of the Royal Horticultural Society and his
interest in structural biology, plant physiology and plant breeding
is evident in this collection of papers, published in 1841. On his
country estate in Herefordshire, Knight devoted his time to
research and writing, and carried out experiments on plants and
trees. He published papers on his theories about such physiological
problems as the ascent and descent of sap and how buds are
produced. The main focus, however, is on Knight's own practical
work: building greenhouses and experimenting with plant nutrition,
fertilisation and the improvement of fruit trees by selective
breeding (work later appreciated by Darwin). In an interesting
chapter on animals, Knight relates his observations on the
behaviour of bees and dogs.

A comprehensive review of recent scientific evidence examining the
contributions of animal experimentation to human healthcare. The
book also explores toxicity prediction, animal use during life and
health sciences education, impacts on student attitudes toward
animals, and the extent to which animals suffer in laboratories.
