This edited book presents an array of approaches on how human
factors theory and research addresses the challenges associated
with combat identification. Special emphasis is placed on reducing
human error that leads to fratricide, which is the unintentional
death or injury of friendly personnel by friendly weapons during an
enemy engagement. Although fratricide has been a concern since
humans first engaged in combat operations, it gained prominence
during the Persian Gulf War. To reduce fratricide, advances in
technological approaches to enhance combat identification (e.g.,
Blue Force Tracker) should be coupled with the application of human
factors principles to reduce human error. The book brings together
a diverse group of authors from academic and military researchers
to government contractors and commercial developers to provide a
single volume with broad appeal. Human Factors Issues in Combat
Identification is intended for the larger human factors community
within academia, the military and other organizations that work
with the military such as government contractors and commercial
developers as well as others interested in combat identification
issues including military personnel and policy makers.

Can renewable energy provide reliable power? Will it need extensive
backup? The energy available from wind, waves, tides and the sun
varies in ways that may not match variations in energy demand.
Assimilating these fluctuations can affect the operation and
economics of electricity networks, markets and the output of other
forms of generation. Is this a significant problem, or can these
new sources be integrated into the grid system without the need for
extensive backup or energy storage capacity? This book examines the
significance of the issue of variability of renewable electricity
supplies, and presents technical and operational solutions to the
problem of reconciling the differing patterns of supply and demand.
Its chapters are authored by leading experts in the field, who aim
to explain and quantify the impacts of variability in renewable
energy, and in doing so, dispel many of the myths and
misunderstandings surrounding the topic.
The early Salvation Army professed its commitment to sexual
equality in ministry and leadership. In fact, its founding
constitution proclaimed women had the right to preach and hold any
office in the organization. But did they?
"Women in God's Army" is the first study of its kind devoted to
the critical analysis of this central claim. It traces the extent
to which this egalitarian ideal was realized in the private and
public lives of first- and second-generation female Salvationists
in Britain and argues that the Salvation Army was found wanting in
its overall commitment to women's equality with men. Bold
pronouncements were not matched by actual practice in the home or
in public ministry.
Andrew Mark Eason traces the nature of these discrepancies, as
well as the Victorian and evangelical factors that lay behind them.
He demonstrates how Salvationists often assigned roles and
responsibilities on the basis of gender rather than equality, and
the ways in which these discriminatory practices were supported by
a male-defined theology and authority. He views this story from a
number of angles, including historical, gender and feminist
theology, ensuring it will be of interest to a wide spectrum of
readers. Salvationists themselves will appreciate the light it
sheds on recent debates. Ultimately, however, anyone who wants to
learn more about the human struggle for equality will find this
book enlightening.

Three audio adventures based on the Eagle comic strip "Dan Dare"
created by Rev. Marcus Morris, adapted and drawn by Frank Hampson.
Episode 1 - Voyage to Venus by Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle.
Brilliant test pilot, Dan Dare, is chosen to fly the Anastasia - a
new experimental spacecraft - on its maiden voyage to Venus. This
isn't exploration - it is to make first contact with a mysterious
civilisation that has sent technological secrets as a goodwill
gesture. However, what Dan, Digby and Professor Peabody find on
Venus isn't goodwill, but a terrifyingly intelligent, cold-hearted
ruler, the Mekon. A creature destined to become Dan Dare's nemesis
- and Earth's greatest threat...Episode 2 - The Red Moon Mystery by
James Swallow.Unable to return to Earth, Dan Dare and the crew of
the Anastasia head to the desolate planet Mars, where Dan's
estranged Uncle Ivor is part of a research team working on a
top-secret archaeological dig; but when they find the base wrecked
and the scientists missing, Dare, Digby and Professor Peabody soon
discover that the Red Planet is not nearly as dead as everyone
thought and that Ivor's expedition has woken an army of deadly
insect-creatures that threaten to swarm and engulf the Earth.
..Dare must stop the aliens, but can he really resort to genocide
in order to save the human race?Episode 3 - Marooned on Mercury by
Marc Platt. When a distress call summons the crew of the Anastasia
to the burning wilderness of Mercury, they are reunited with their
old ally, Sondar. He tells them of the beleaguered Mercurians who
are held in thrall to a cruel new taskmaster - the Mekon! The
exiled Mekon is rallying his forces, plotting a desperate revenge
against his former homeworld of Venus and his hated enemy, Colonel
Dan Dare! Contains a fourth disc of extras. NOTE: Dan Dare features
some mild swearing and content which may not be suitable for
younger listeners.
Narrative research has become a catchword in the social sciences
today, promising new fields of inquiry and creative solutions to
persistent problems. This book will bring together ideas about
narrative from a variety of contexts across the social sciences and
synthesizes understandings of the field. Rather than focusing on
theory, the book will examine how narrative research is conducted
and applied. It will operate as an introductory guide, simple
enough for the beginner, but also as a window onto the more complex
questions and difficulties that all researchers in this area face.
It will guide readers through current debates not just about how to
obtain and analyse narrative data, but about the nature of
narrative, the place of the researcher, the limits of researcher
interpretations, and the significance of narrative work in applied
and in broader political contexts.
Written in a respectful manner this book seeks better understanding
on the question of Israel, and examines the Scriptures and
differences of opinion amongst Christians. This book traces the
origin of the name Israel as a spiritual title given to Jacob, then
looks at the rise of the Israelite nation, followed by division
into the House of Israel and House of Judah. Periods of exile and
prophetic writings followed, until the coming of Jesus. Paul and
Peter describe Jesus as a stumbling block placed in Zion because
many Jews could not accept their own Messiah, and the ongoing
dispute between Christians and Jews on the question of who Jesus is
reflects this. Do the Jewish and Gentile followers of Jesus today
form true Israel, or does the State of Israel, or the Jewish people
have a claim? Has the Church replaced Israel or are Christian
Zionists correct? Or is there a more balanced way forward that
better reflects the teaching of Scripture. This book seeks a true
biblical solution that respects and loves the Jewish people, but is
also faithful to Jesus and the Church.
This book examines the foundations of evolution and deep-time from
non-Christian cultures in the Ancient Middle East and Indian
Sub-Continent. It then examines how such pagan-religious beliefs
were brought into the emrging scientific arena by Enlightenment
philosophers who had an interest in Greek paganism and Hinduism -
men such as Erasmus Darwin, David Hume and Benoit de Maillet. It
then looks in detail at developments in the 19th century with
references for instance to the writings of Charles Darwin, Charles
Lyell and Thomas Huxley.
This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open
Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com.

This book is a comprehensive study of the Radon transform, which
operates on a function by integrating it over hyperplanes. The book
begins with an elementary and graphical introduction to the Radon
transform, tomography and CT scanners, followed by a rigorous
development of the basic properties of the Radon transform. Next
the author introduces Grassmann manifolds in the study of the
k-plane transform (a version of the Radon transform) which
integrates over k-dimensional planes rather than hyperplanes. The
remaining chapters are concerned with more advanced topics, such as
the attenuated Radon transform and generalized Radon transforms
defined by duality of homogeneous spaces and double fibrations.
Questions of invertibility and the range of the Radon transform are
dealt with and inversion formulas are developed with particular
attention to functions on L2 spaces and some discussion of the case
of Lp spaces.
This volume consists of a collection of papers that brings together
fundamental research in Radon transforms, integral geometry, and
tomography. It grew out of the Special Session at a Sectional
Meeting of the American Mathematical Society in 2004. The book
contains very recent work of some of the top researchers in the
field. The articles in the book deal with the determination of
properties of functions on a manifold by integral theoretic
methods, or by determining the geometric structure of subsets of a
manifold by analytic methods. Of particular concern are ways of
reconstructing an unknown function from some of its
projections.Radon transforms were developed at the beginning of the
twentieth century by researchers who were motivated by problems in
differential geometry, mathematical physics, and partial
differential equations. Later, medical applications of these
transforms produced breakthroughs in imaging technology that
resulted in the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for the
development of computerized tomography. Today the subject boasts
substantial cross-disciplinary interactions, both in pure and
applied mathematics as well as medicine, engineering, biology,
physics, geosciences, and industrial testing. Therefore, this
volume should be of interest to a wide spectrum of researchers both
in mathematics and in other fields.

In this completely revised second edition of their well-received book, Gavin Andrews and his team continue to draw upon the materials and methods that they have used successfully in clinical practice for 15 years. Over half the material in this edition is new, and an entirely new section covering post-traumatic stress disorder has been included. This is an unique and authoritative overview of the recognition and treatment of anxiety disorders, giving Clinician Guides and Patient Treatment Manuals for each. The Treatment of Anxiety Disorders offers both a theoretical overview and a framework to help psychiatrists and clinical psychologists build successful treatment programs.
