The Scottish political economist Sir James Steuart (1713-1780)
completed the first two books of the Principles while living in
Tubingen in 1759. One of the most important features of Steuart's
career was his extensive knowledge of the Continent. The Foreign
Tour (1735-40) and exile as a result of his association with the
Jacobites (1745-63) meant that by the end of the Seven Years' War,
Sir James had spent almost half of his life abroad; facts which
help to explain the Eurocentric nature of his work.
In his four-volume "Principles", Steuart noted, for example, the
economic consequences of the Seven Years' War in Germany, the state
of agriculture in Picardy, and the problem of depopulation in the
cities of the Austrian Netherlands.

represents the first comprehensive Smith index ever published. For
over fifteen years, Liberty Fund has made paperback editions of
these classics accessible to a wider audience than ever before.

of Adam Smith, students and researchers in all fields have a
single, unified source for locating Adam Smith's many contributions
to such diverse fields as economics, morality, philosophy, and law.
This easy-to-use index helps students, readers, and researchers to
trace their topics of interest through all of Adam Smith's work.
This volume is a comprehensive, analytical index to the Glasgow Edition of the Works of Adam Smith. Incorporating Smith's original indexes, authorities cited by Smith, cross references to Smith's own writings, and indexes of statutes and place names, the Index succeeds in identifying the concepts delivered and employed by Smith himself. It should prove an invaluable reference tool for all Adam Smith scholars.
