Dario Cantu, M. Andrew Walker
R6,044 Discovery Miles 60 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book describes the current state of international grape genomics, with a focus on the latest findings, tools and strategies employed in genome sequencing and analysis, and genetic mapping of important agronomic traits. It also discusses how these are having a direct impact on outcomes for grape breeders and the international grape research community. While V. vinifera is a model species, it is not always appreciated that its cultivation usually requires the use of other Vitis species as rootstocks. The book discusses genetic diversity within the Vitis genus, the available genetic resources for breeding, and the available genomic resources for other Vitis species. Grapes (Vitis vinifera spp. vinifera) have been a source of food and wine since their domestication from their wild progenitor (Vitis vinifera ssp. sylvestris) around 8,000 years ago, and they are now the world's most valuable horticultural crop. In addition to being economically important, V. vinifera is also a model organism for the study of perennial fruit crops for two reasons: Firstly, its ability to be transformed and micropropagated via somatic embryogenesis, and secondly its relatively small genome size of 500 Mb. The economic importance of grapes made V. vinifera an obvious early candidate for genomic sequencing, and accordingly, two draft genomes were reported in 2007. Remarkably, these were the first genomes of any fruiting crop to be sequenced and only the fourth for flowering plants. Although riddled with gaps and potentially omitting large regions of repetitive sequences, the two genomes have provided valuable insights into grape genomes. Cited in over 2,000 articles, the genome has served as a reference in more than 3,000 genome-wide transcriptional analyses. Further, recent advances in DNA sequencing and bioinformatics are enabling the assembly of reference-grade genome references for more grape genotypes revealing the exceptional extent of structural variation in the species.

Green Infrastructure - Map and Plan the Natural World with GIS (Paperback): Karen E Firehock, R Andrew Walker Green Infrastructure - Map and Plan the Natural World with GIS (Paperback)

This book describes the why and how of green infrastructure mapping and implementation through text, maps and on-line illustrations. It explains how to utilize the national green infrastructure model that Esri has built using the Green Infrastructure Center's methodology. It demonstrates though print and online map layers, how to develop a prioritized strategy for conserving or restoring the highest values to natural resources. It also explains how this analysis is then used to inform a host of planning applications from drinking water protection, to endangered species conservation, to recreation, as well as preservation of culturally significant landscapes. The book uses actual data to create two real case studies, one for a western and one for an eastern landscape showing how the Esri model can be adapted using local data to create a custom GI plan. The reason for this is to demonstrate the application of the national GI model to local planning. The book also demonstrates how data from the Esri Living Atlas can be included and used to customize maps.

Performing Orthodox Ritual in Byzantium (Paperback): Andrew Walker White Performing Orthodox Ritual in Byzantium (Paperback)
Andrew Walker White
R946 Discovery Miles 9 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this groundbreaking, interdisciplinary study, Andrew Walker White explores the origins of Byzantine ritual - the rites of the early Greek Orthodox Church - and its unique relationship with traditional theatre. Tracing the secularization of pagan theatre, the rise of rhetoric as an alternative to acting, as well as the transmission of ancient methods of musical composition into the Byzantine era, White demonstrates how Christian ritual was in effect a post-theatrical performing art, created by intellectuals who were fully aware of traditional theatre but who endeavoured to avoid it. The book explores how Orthodox rites avoid the aesthetic appreciation associated with secular art, and conducts an in-depth study (and reconstruction) of the late Byzantine Service of the Furnace. Often treated as a liturgical drama, White translates and delineates the features of five extant versions, to show how and why it generated widely diverse audience reactions in both medieval times and our own.

Forest Guardians, Forest Destroyers - The Politics of Environmental Knowledge in Northern Thailand (Paperback): Tim Forsyth,... Forest Guardians, Forest Destroyers - The Politics of Environmental Knowledge in Northern Thailand (Paperback)
Tim Forsyth, Andrew Walker; Foreword by K. Sivaramakrishnan
R771 Discovery Miles 7 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this far-reaching examination of environmental problems and politics in northern Thailand, Tim Forsyth and Andrew Walker analyze deforestation, water supply, soil erosion, use of agrochemicals, and biodiversity in order to challenge popularly held notions of environmental crisis. They argue that such crises have been used to support political objectives of state expansion and control in the uplands. They have also been used to justify the alternative directions advocated by an array of NGOs. In official and alternative discourses of economic development, the peoples living in Thailand's hill country are typically cast as either guardians or destroyers of forest resources, often depending on their ethnicity. Political and historical factors have created a simplistic, misleading, and often scientifically inaccurate environmental narrative: Hmong farmers, for example, are thought to exhibit environmentally destructive practices, whereas the Karen are seen as linked to and protective of their ancestral home. Forsyth and Walker reveal a much more complex relationship of hill farmers to the land, to other ethnic groups, and to the state. They conclude that current explanations fail to address the real causes of environmental problems and unnecessarily restrict the livelihoods of local people. The authors' critical assessment of simplistic environmental narratives, as well as their suggestions for finding solutions, will be valuable in international policy discussions about environmental issues in rapidly developing countries. Moreover, their redefinition of northern Thailand's environmental problems, and their analysis of how political influences have reinforced inappropriate policies, demonstrate new ways of analyzing how environmental science and knowledge are important arenas for political control. This book makes valuable contributions to Thai studies and more generally to the fields of environmental science, ecology, geography, anthropology, and political science, as well as to policy making and resource management in the developing world.

'Eat the Heart of the Infidel' - The Harrowing of Nigeria and the Rise of Boko Haram (Paperback): Andrew Walker 'Eat the Heart of the Infidel' - The Harrowing of Nigeria and the Rise of Boko Haram (Paperback)
Andrew Walker
R547 Discovery Miles 5 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Boko Haram's appetite for exemplary violence and kidnapping women and girls has thrust it to the top of the global news agenda. In a few furious years its cadres have all but severed parts of northern Nigeria -- Africa's most populous state and largest economy -- from the hands of the government in Abuja. Videos broadcast by Boko Haram feature its leader, a grimacing rantingdemagogue who taunts viewers, claiming he will 'eat the heart of the infidel' and calling on Nigerians to reject their corrupt democracy and return to a 'pure' form of Islam. Thousands have been slaughtered in their campaign of purification which has evolved through a bloody civil war. In Northern Nigeria - which has witnessed many caliphates in the past - radical ideas flourish and strange sects are common. Boko Haram has drawn on and exploited these traditions to mobilise people against the corruption of Nigeria's politicians and oligarchs who have preyed on a state buoyed by oil revenues and turned public institutions into spoons for the pot. When the going was good it didn't matter. Now a new ravenous force threatens them all.Andrew Walker guides the reader through Boko Haram's hinterland - examining northern Nigeria's history, culture and politics - in search of where the group comes from and where Nigeria might be going.

The author shares a record of his life's footprints with future generations of his family who can never know him or witness historical events and paradigm shifts as he has over the past eight decades. He describes the hardships of growing up on a working farm in rural Alabama in the mid-twentieth century and later his educational and professional accomplishments after overcoming the disadvantages of poverty and other adversity. He honors his colonial ancestors and their descendants, including Revolutionary War soldiers, by remembering and writing about them and includes extensive family trees for his Walkers,Whites, Smithsons, Slatons, and Paynes. His military exploits are more properly described as escapades. He talks about his brushes with the technological and scientific innovations and reaction to major social and cultural shifts as one who understands the historical import of this most unusual age in our country's evolution.
