Mit der flachendeckenden Pionierarbeit der Beschreibung der Baudenkmaler Polens nach historischen Regionen werden deutschen Lesern die Kultur- und Kunstschatze des wenig bekannten Nachbarlandes wie auch des 'gemeinsamen Kulturerbes' naher gebracht. Erstmalig in der teilweise schwierigen deutsch-polnischen Beziehungsgeschichte werden die ca. 2500 bedeutendsten Objekte mit den wichtigsten Baudaten und Informationen zu Ausstattung und beteiligten Kunstlern unter Berucksichtigung ihrer historischen Funktionen dargestellt: in der Metropole Breslau, in Residenzstadten wie Glogau, Liegnitz oder Teschen, in regionalen Zentren wie Hirschberg oder Glatz, in kleineren Landstadten und schliesslich in den jungeren Industrieregionen um Waldenburg und Kattowitz, dazu bedeutende Kloster- und Wallfahrtsanlagen wie Grussau, Heinrichau oder Annaberg ebenso wie eine Vielzahl von Schloessern und Herrensitzen. Samtliche Orte sind nach den heute gultigen Ortsnamen angeordnet. Ein Ortsregister und ein Kunstlerverzeichnis sowie reiches Karten- und Planmaterial und ein Glossar erganzen die Texte. Damit liegt ein fur Kunsthistoriker wie fur alle an Schlesien Interessierte unentbehrliches Handbuch vor. In Anlehnung an die von Georg Dehio begrundeten traditionsreichen deutschen Handbucher eroeffnet der Band uber Schlesien die neue Reihe 'Dehio-Handbuch der Kunstdenkmaler in Polen'. Sie wird von einem Team aus deutschen und polnischen Kunsthistorikern unter der Leitung des Herder-Instituts Marburg in Kooperation mit der Dehio-Vereinigung und fuhrenden polnischen Einrichtungen bearbeitet und herausgegeben. Der Band erscheint parallel auf polnisch.
