The principal themes pursued in this book emerge from the great transformation that the Latin American and the Caribbean economies experienced in the aftermath of both the foreign debt crisis of 1982 and the macroeconomic stabilisation policies that vividly and painfully produced the so-called "lost decade" of the 1980s. Latin America implemented an economic liberalisation process during the late 1980s and the 1990s. The main policy reforms involved in that course can be summarized as privatization of state owned firms, trade openness, deregulation of the foreign direct investment (FDI) regime and fiscal discipline. Latin American countries have also embarked in regional trade agreements, the most important ones being Mercosur and the North American Free trade Agreement (NAFTA). This book compares results from the experience of North-South and South-South moulds of integration. Thus, the impacts of these policies on growth, development, technological progress, poverty and inequality are analysed. Orthodox and heterodox economic policies and theories are discussed along with relevant empirical evidence with a view to assess, on the one hand, the relative merits of the various policy reforms applied by different countries in the region, and on the other, the experience of integration into the global economy. There are thirteen chapters in this collection linked in varying ways to the series of economic reforms introduced in the region in the last decades. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers, students and policymakers interested in the study of economic development in emerging economies and in particular in Latin America.

It explains the theoretical foundations of the neoliberal paradigm and the implications of the policies that were labelled as the Washington Consensus. The book also incorporates an assessment on the socio-political norms added to the orthodox prescription, the so-called Post-Washington Consensus. The study comprises a general analysis on the subcontinent and on different economic liberalisation paths, and looks at four country case studies: Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, from the 1980s to recent years. From this approach, the reader can analyse weaknesses and strengths, the socioeconomic performance, and the difficulties that Latin America has presented through the turbulent process of economic liberalisation, both at an early stage and over the long run, by means of country case studies encompassing the most diverse and representative styles of economic openness in the subcontinent. In this paper, the authors show the existence of the first non trivial family of classical global solutions of the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation.

The book explores the effects of the internationalisation of economies on income distribution through a global analysis and a relevant country case, Mexico. The global analysis illustrates that, of the set of economic norms that dominated the political economy during the 1980s and mid-1990s, low inflation and the promotion of employment reduce inequality, FDI increases it and trade exerts a weak benefit on income distribution. The study also shows a direct relationship between economic growth and income inequality. The country case indicates that inequality has tended to increase in post-reform Mexico, mainly due to the rise in skill premium, the fall of unionisation rates, deterioration of the agricultural sector, the rise of services, and capital concentration. The set of socio-political norms that have been promoted by multilateral institutions since the mid-1990s, as an addition to the original orthodox prescription, represents an improvement of the economic liberalisation process. In this respect, domestic efficiency, government expenditure, and education mitigate the adverse effect of economic liberalisation.

Este trabajo se centro en el comportamiento de varias especies de interferentes y modificadores quimicos en fase solida en una plataforma de grafito. Tambien se estudio el comportamiento de los principales componentes de la matriz (aluminio y silicio) solos y junto con los modificadores y el analito (As). Asi, en la primera parte de este trabajo se estudio el comportamiento de diferentes interferentes, sulfatos y cloruros de metales alcalinos (sodio, potasio) y alcalinoterreos (calcio, magnesio y berilio), asi como, cloruro y nitrato de aluminio. Los mecanismos de descomposicion de dichas sales se elucidaron en fase condensada a diversas temperaturas. Como modificadores quimicos se estudiaron sales de torio y circonio, mientras que como principales componentes de la matriz se utilizaron los oxidos de silicio y aluminio. La localizacion del residuo solido fue posible utilizando la microscopia electronica de barrido (SEM), mientras que la identificacion de los elementos se llevo a cabo mediante espectrometria de rayos X empleando un detector de energias dispersivas. De manera similar, los compuestos solidos se identificaron por microanalisis Raman y espectrometria FT-IR.
