Nebraska is not usually thought of as a focal point in the history of black baseball yet the state has seen its share of contributions to the African American baseball experience. This book focuses on nine of the most significant, including the rise and fall of the Lincoln Giants, Satchel Paige's adventures in the Cornhusker State, a visit from Jackie Robinson, and the maturation of Bob Gibson both on and off the field. Recollections are featured from individuals who participated in or witnessed the African American baseball experience in the Omaha area.

With virtually the same lineup that had won both the National League pennant and the World Series the previous season, the 1926 Pittsburgh Pirates were favored by the majority of preseason prognosticators to capture the pennant for the second year in a row. But they finished in third place, four and a half games behind the St. Louis Cardinals. That failure has largely been attributed to the ""ABC Affair,"" the alleged dissension between vice president and assistant to the manager Fred Clarke and several players who attempted to remove him. This retelling of the story shows that the blame assigned to Clarke has mostly been misplaced and that the reasons for the Bucs' 1926 failure were far more complex.

The Ebbets Field volume is the second in McFarland's series on historic ballparks. The book combines articles about the park and the memories of those who went there in any capacity. Essay topics include long time Dodger owner Charles Ebbets, Brooklyn at the opening and closing of the park, the first and last Dodger games at Ebbets Field, black baseball at Ebbets Field, non-baseball events at Ebbets Field and statistical analyses of the park. The memories section includes the reminiscences of Dodger and visiting players as well as fans of all types and ages.

Essays cover Charles Comiskey and the location of the ballpark; the neighbourhoods that surround the site; the dimensions and configurations of Old Comiskey Park; a summary of All-Star, World Series, and playoff games played there; Negro League baseball at Comiskey Park; Bill Veeck; the ballpark as host to events and sports other than White Sox baseball; and an analysis of the evolution of the famous "exploding scoreboard," the original model for today's modern sports stadium boards. Former players, White Sox personnel, and fans contributed memories, including substantial pieces by Roland Hemond and Nancy Faust.

From its 1909 construction through the final game on June 28, 1970, this volume presents a detailed look at Forbes Field, home to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 62 seasons. Part I includes essays on important events at the stadium (not just in major league baseball but in boxing, football, and black baseball?Forbes Field also housed the Homestead Grays) as well as a transcript of the last game's play-by-play. Historians consider the stadium's legacy and discuss the dimensions and configurations of the field. In Part II, more than 55 former players, managers, and club officials of the Pittsburgh Pirates, over 100 fans, and several sportswriters reminisce.
