Evolving from a conversation between Joshua Whitehead and Angie
Abdou, Indigiqueerness is part dialogue, part collage, and part
memoir. Beginning with memories of his childhood poetry and prose
and travelling through the library of his life, Whitehead
contemplates the role of theory, Indigenous language, queerness,
and fantastical worlds in all his artistic pursuits. This volume is
imbued with Whitehead’s energy and celebrates Indigenous writers
and creators who defy expectations and transcend genres.

Digger, an 85 kilo wrestler, and Sadie, a 26-year-old speed
swimmer, stand on the verge of realizing every athlete' s dream--
winning a gold medal at the Olympics. Both athletes are nearing the
end of their athletic careers, and are forced to confront the
question: what happens to athletes when their bodies are too old
and injured to compete? The blossoming relationship between Digger
and Sadie is tested in the all-important months leading up to the
Olympics, as intense training schedules, divided loyalties, and
unpredicted obstacles take their draining toll. The Olympics, as
both of them are painfully aware, will be the realization or the
end of a life' s dream. The Bone Cage captures the physicality,
sensuality, and euphoric highs of amateur sport, and the darker,
cruel side of sport programs that wear athletes down and spit them
out at the end of their bloom. With realism and humour, author
Angie Abdou captures athletes on the brink of that transition-- the
lead-up to that looming redefinition of self-- and explores how
people deal with the loss of their dream.
Winner of the Gold Medal for Western Canadian Fiction at the 2012
Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards It's the last ski weekend
of the season and a mishmash of snow-enthusiasts is on its way to a
remote backwoods cabin. In an odd pilgrimage through the mountains,
the townsfolk of Coalton--from the ski bum to the urbanite--embark
on a bizarre adventure that walks the line between comedy and
tragedy. As the rednecks mount their sleds and the hippies snowshoe
through the cedar forest, we see rivals converge for the weekend.
While readers follow the characters on their voyage up and over the
mountain, stereotypes of ski-town culture fall away. Loco, the ski
bum, is about to start his first real job; Alison, the urbanite, is
forced to learn how to wield an avalanche shovel; and Michael, the
real estate developer, is high on mushroom tea. In a blend of
mordant humour and heartbreak, Angie Abdou chronicles a day in the
life of these industrious few as they attempt to conquer the
mountain. In an avalanche of action, Angie Abdou explores the way
in which people treat their fellow citizens and the landscape they
love.
In this carefully curated collection of essays, editors Jamie Dopp
and Angie Abdou go beyond their first collection, Writing the Body
in Motion, to engage with the meaning of sport found in Canadian
sport literature. How does “sport” differ from physically risky
recreational activities that require strength and skill? Does sport
demand that someone win? At what point does a sport become an art?
With the aim of prompting reflections on and discussions of the
boundaries of sport, contributors explore how literature engages
with sport as a metaphor, as a language, and as bodily expression.
Instead of a focus on what is often described as Canada’s
national pastime, contributors examine sports in Canadian
literature that are decidedly not hockey. From skateboarding and
parkour to fly fishing and curling, these essays engage with
Canadian histories and broader societal understandings through
sports on the margin. Interspersed with original reflections by
iconic Canadian literary figures such as Steven Heighton, Aritha
Van Herk, Thomas Wharton, and Timothy Taylor, this volume is fresh
and intriguing and offers new ways of reading the body.
