This pioneering study of the Indonesian presidency significantly
redefines our understanding of Indonesian politics from
independence to the present. Angus McIntyre blends political
biography with constitutional history to locate Indonesian leaders
within both Indonesian cultural frameworks and the global
biographical literature on political leaders. The Indonesian
Presidency shows how Indonesias constitution provided first for the
personal rule of presidents Sukarno and Soeharto and then
facilitated the shift towards constitutional rule that marked the
presidencies of B.J. Habibie, Abdurrahman Wahid, and Megawati
Sukarnoputri. This important study elevates the personalities of
Sukarno and Shoeharto into key explanatory factors for the
character of their Guided Democracy and New Order regimes,
respectively. It argues that in Sukarno began fashioning his system
of personal rule, to the detriment of Indonesias parliamentary
democracy. Another constitutional turning point occurred in, when a
rudimentary constitutional rule reappeared. counterpoint in the
relationship between Megawati and her father, which makes this
unique blend of history and biography a powerful tool for
understanding the Indonesian presidency. An afterword by the author

Visitors from other planets have long obsessed us. H.G. Wells' War
of Worlds spawned a huge wave of speculative fiction but the roots
of such fears run deep in our literature, where the mysteries of
other cultures have long threatened the familiar and the
comfortable. Did aliens build the ancient pyramids? do they live
amongst us today? what happens when they invade? And are they just
the people from the next valley? or country? or planet? Would it be
an inevitable act of aggression, one of assistance and care, or
simply a reminder of our paltry existence in a crowded universe?
Flame Tree's successful Gothic Fantasy series brings a brilliant
new mix of classic and new writing, in this beautiful edition.
These new authors appear alongside the following classic and
essential writers: George Tomkyns Chesney, George Allan England,
Austin Hall, H.P. Lovecraft, A. Merritt, Robert Potter, Garrett P.
Serviss, Jonathan Swift, Voltaire, H.G. Wells; along with text from
The Taking of Ireland (retold tales from The Book of Invasions).
This book is about awkward moments in life. Can you say something
in a few seconds in an elevator to touch another person in a
meaningful way? Why are these seconds so awkward or uncomfortable
for us? Are they as difficult for others as they are for us?
Help to find answers to these questions is now available. You
will share many experiences others had in embarrassing or awkward
situations. By hearing how others handled these occasions you may
find something useful for yourself.
Words are terribly, terribly important and the book
demonstrates the positive impact your words can have, even in the
most difficult circumstances. The book is a challenge with a strong
call to action rather than enduring these predicaments with
embarrassment and awkwardness. This can be easily accomplished by
simply thinking about what we might do or say before these
occasions arise.
