This report summarizes sessions that RAND researchers convened
during the 2010 Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations
conference to generate a national policy agenda addressing
challenges to effectively engaging nongovernmental organizations in
disaster response and recovery and to identify potential policy and
program recommendations to address these challenges.
Documents the program and community settings, interventions, and
implementations of 15 programs across the country that provide
interventions for families in which children have been exposed to
violence. The 15 programs were part of Safe Start Promising
Approaches, an initiative aimed at building knowledge about the
effectiveness of specific intervention strategies intended to
reduce the harmful effects of children1s exposure to violence.
CBITS was developed for use by school-based mental health
professionals for any student with symptoms of distress following
exposure to trauma. SSET was adapted from CBITS for use by any
school personnel with the time and interest to work with students
affected by trauma. This toolkit assists social workers,
school-based mental health professionals, and school personnel in
adapting these interventions for use with youth who are in foster
care.
Community Resilience: Practical Applications to Strengthen Whole
Communities in Disaster blends resilience theory and empirical
analysis with lessons learned from recent activities to implement
and test community resilience strengthening strategies and measure
resilience progress. Contributions from key settings and
disciplines on the role of resilience theory and science in local
implementation are included, providing a stronger operational
framework for resilience science than has previously been offered.
The book also elevates the discussion by integrating theory where
practical handbooks have missed those considerations.
